About 10 more days for the change to begin here in the eastern Sierra. Brisk air, maybe a little early snow and orange everywhere is overwhelmingly beautiful.
I like being warm, and I love being surrounded by green growing things. And I live where trees lose leaves… though I refuse to live where it snows more than sometimes. So I’m w/ Mr. Spaetzle: Fall leaves, falling, are a sign of the worst part of the year getting right up on me.
It’s like gray hair, and I should know*: A full canopy of it is a glorious thing. But the first few individual units here and there are somehow cause for alarm. We humans do not like change, I guess.

*I wasn’t always bald, and I’m technically not bald now. I’ve been shaving my head for, oh, my, a decade now. When I last∞ had hair, it was a very light shade of gray. It had gotten that way gradually, and had time to, since the first gray strands started showing up in earnest when I was in my mid-teens.

∞ Not including two fairly recent, very brief stretches when I was facing upcoming cold-water swims and wanted every wisp of legal insulation I could get. Both instances were an emphatic reminder to shave it off again as soon as I warmed up. I’m not only not bald, I’m not even male-pattern bald. The hair grows where it’s supposed to, but in that upper-scalp sector, it’s present but thin. Thin enough to look … desperate.

Leaves don’t change color, the green fades away and whatever is left shows through.

As a former resident of central PA, I got to see lots of color change every year. Mr. Spatzle’s freaking out was little compared to ours.
