While the birds are off to their winter homes, fall is a great time to plant native perennials to help feed them when they come back. Especially in the spring when they are feeding babies, most birds need lots of caterpillars and insects. They will find the most bugs on trees and shrubs native to your region. https://www.audubon.org/news/new-research-further-proves-native-plants-offer-more-bugs-birds

I miss songbirds! Between forest loss due to fires and bark beetles and the hotter, drier weather of the past 25 years there are almost no songbirds where I live anymore.

Farm stores have Scratch Mix which is inexpensive and actually a healthy balanced mix for birds, ducks, and geese around the lake.

Feeding birds is nice, but I draw the line at the ones who want to feed the Canadian Geese. We have far too many around here and they leave a mess wherever they go.
