Long trips get very boring in cars, trains, or planes. In a motorhome, at least there is room for a variety of entertainment.

We took our nephews there once (2 13 y/o, 1 15 y/o). We all hit the restrooms when we got there. As soon as they were done they all went to see the monument without letting us know. Hubby & I waited for them to exit, becoming increasingly nervous. Them we saw them returning & the silly boys thought we were done & going to leave. Uh no, there are exhibits to see, we did not drive all that way for a 1 min glimpse! They actually took a photo of the picture on the soda machine to send home rather than the real thing.

You’re supposed to get out when you get to Mt Rushmore

The trip was a giant bust…..four of them actually.

Oooo… cliffhanger.

Maybe they tied her on the roof like Mit Romney’s dog.

Once you’ve seen Rushmore, head on over to the Devil’s Tower which is relatively nearby. Then on to the Crazy Horse memorial. All worth seeing in the Black Hills.

skip the four heads entirely, it’s insulting to the sacred land it defiles. go see Crazy Horse instead, the monument and its whole complex will make you sing!

Are we missing panel five…?

If I learned one thing from “Nebraska,” it’s that Mt. Rushmore is overrated.

Either the parents are geniuses or the AC broke down on it’s own.

“My parents are geniuses” is not a phrase I ever expect to hear from anyone younger than adult.

In Richard Russo’s wonderful book “Straight Man,” the narrator makes great use of a line, “… I’m not a (fill in the blank), but I can play that role.” I steal that line a lot and mostly keep it inside my head. But I live that line even more, and openly so, and call myself a writer.

I’m not a genius, but I can play that role. Or, rather, I can assign my characters to play that role. And of all the roles I assign, that one may be the most intimidating. I’m no Richard Russo.

Being a genius is someone who sees things, knows things and figures out things not done before. Or in ways no one else has thought of them. So I take the little red haired girl’s calling her parents “geniuses” with a grain of salt.
