I googled the original NYT tail between the legs “explanation” for this change. Two points: First, the NYT removed political cartoons from the national edition some time ago; this decision, made on 6/11, applied to the international edition. Second, all of the 39 comments available from the NYT website were opposed to this new editorial policy.
I’m happy to say I have no idea what this is about (Or didn’t until I started reading the comments). There’s probably still a lot of news published in the NYT, but there’s been more than enough Judith Miller and Jayson Blair stuff for my tastes.
For someone like me, an editorial cartoon addict, this is another nail in the coffin. It also strikes me as a form of intellectual dishonesty, as well as cowardice. (Small boast: The WashPost supports two editorial cartoonists, Toles and Telnaes, as well as a Saturday feature selection of a variety of other cartoonists of a spectrum of opinions.)
Another win for T-drump… another loss for the the people of the United States of America’s … The loss of the rule of law and the Constitution… Are we tired of winning yet? Are we tired of watching our news media destroyed by the true enemy of the people… You know that guy who inhabits the offal orifice… are we tired of a privately owned opinionated faux noise Channel dictating White House opinion and telling this Administration what it’s supposed to be thinking on all subjects of the day? Are we tired of the so-called winning of this Administration that we are going to voted out in 2020??? Sheesh, I definitely had a different image of what winning entailed!!!
I suspect they are just using this as an excuse to dump cartoons. The number of political cartoonists in newspapers has plummeted over the past decade or so, which is too bad, since the best can force people to think harder — and more differently — than whole Sunday editions.
Gotta take the good with the bad or else free speech loses and so do we. I truly dislike some of the rw cartoonists (Kelley), but the rw hate the sane cartoonists, so where does it end?
