This is so timely for me! I have a bunch of squirrels who keep robbing my bird feeders. They have parties out there. I have 3 cats and I sic them on the squirrels. I tell one of my male cats, Bailey, that he is the bouncer of the squirrel parties. I open the door and they chase off squirrels that are gathered under the tree eating the birdseed.

We have a pair of bird feeders that hang from a pole with dual shepherd’s hooks. A squirrel lost his tail by getting it stuck in the junction where the hooks came together. I see the little guy/gal from time to time – still scampers across the cables strung between the power poles OK. Reminder to self – get some twine and wrap the junction so that no other squirrel loses his/her tail in the same way.

You can make them squirrel resistant but you can’t make them squirrel proof!

Easy to stop the tree rats – run a hot electric fence wire for cross support wire – hang the feeder off the wire with a rope – birds are safe to land on the feeder and the squirrels will stay off the hot wire…

Birds can’t taste chili peppers, but squirrels can. So a good dose of cayenne or chili flakes in the birdseed takes care of the marauders

There is a racoon that comes at night and knocks the feeder off, thus spreading the seeds on the ground to make it easier for everyone to eat them.

After one of the monsters ruined my $60 bird feeder, I started just using thistle. They stayed away and my chickadees loved it :)
