I believe a hold is placed for the number of items in your cart until you release them. It would stop it from sold out from under you. Don’t know how long it would be honored or at what price. Fairness and good judgement is called for.

It will, or may, cause pop-up ads reminding you that these things are available.

But Bub gives a pretty incisive analysis at the end. Would that it were always that obvious.

Some online retailers give you a set time to go ahead and purchase the items by reminding you that you left something behind, then they empty the cart if you don’t finish the purchase.

I’m pretty sure that when something is in your cart it is still available to other buyers until you actually purchase it. I know Amazon works that way, because I’ve left things in my cart for a day or two and then went back and it said “Item no longer available, here t is from other sources” or something to that effect

I’ve seen hotel reservation sites that give you a certain amount of time to complete the reservation so you don’t tie up rooms. I’ve also put items in my online cart and then when I click “check out” was told the item was no longer available… Seems to me Betty’s online cart isn’t really full until she completes the purchase.

Sometimes if you leave some stuff on your cart, they send you a text or email, reminding you and giving you a discount to complete the purchase.

HEY! I don’t want to think about work on the weekend! But holding it is the issue…. Some poor slobs might have gotten “out of stock” messages while you were playing.

Didn’t she just delete everything in her cart?

Bottom line it depends on the system the retailer uses. Some will “hold” the item for a certain amount of time. My local movie theater has a count down clock and if you don’t reserve your seat in that time, the ticket goes back “on the shelf” for someone else to grab. Other places like Amazon don’t hold the item at all. Like another reader mentioned above, if you add an item to your cart it can still be grabbed by someone else. I’ve actually seen it almost in real time. I had something in my Amazon cart but I was still shopping, 5-10 minutes later when I was ready to check out, that item was already sold out.
