One does not have to be Catholic or even religious to appreciate the enormity of the tragic loss of incredible cultural and historic treasures.
Without minimizing or downplaying the enormity of the loss, the excellent ’toon by Tom Toles makes a valid point: a much more massive, devastating, existential threat exists to the entire human species as well as to our fellow earthlings of other species.
The banner headline should be about the threat to the entire earth and all sentient life forms as we know them but, yes, we also need to stop, pause and remember the resilient people of Paris who, yet again, will someday be able to sing, “Le jour de gloire est arrivé!”
I was raised in a time when vaccinations and science were seen as good in a melting pot America, where “none of us were as good as all of us”, was beginning to be seen as true after the nationalistic atrocities of WWII and led to the civil rights movement and other proactive actions. Math and science were important in my Republican family and I find it hard to see t today’s GOP unable to be the conservatives that would work with others to prevent a known calamity from happening and actually accept the misinformation and propaganda disseminated by those who continue to damage the earth to profit from the filthy resources that cause the problem.
Politicians (our representatives in a constitutional democratic republic) were supposed to be the gatekeepers to protect us from the populists and obstructionists, but with the introduction of parties — not even mentioned in the Constitution — the mutual respect and trust have been destroyed to a point where the EC -designed to discourage populists and obstructionists - now actually promotes them. I am tired of the division, discord, distrust, lack of respect, and lack of unity in our government and the unity and common cause we can have only when we all work together.
The problem is that there is nothing for film crews to stand in front of, shooting dramatic footage as the reporter gushes and blathers, while the planet’s climate changes!
Excellent job by Tom Toles to make a statement with his political cartoon regarding the Notre Dame fire. Every other political cartoonist I follow, conservative and liberal alike, just drew a picture of a crying gargoyle and called it a day.
Toles did not hear the latest news from California: ski resorts are planning to be open – for skiing – on the 4th of July this year. What global warming???
THANK YOU! When I heard that millionaires were chiming in pledging millions to rebuild, even before the fire was out, all I could think of is “In addition to our Climate Change crisis, where is this support for our veterans who are denied benefits daily? The families with children who are homeless? Where’s the help for those with major illnesses, skipping prescription doses because of high costs?” The people and press are wailing over a building, but shows indifference or politicizes over human life daily.
I saw the writing on the wall in the 50’s with Joe McCarthy and Nixon sealed the deal. I saw it again in 2016 with trump and, just as unsettling, the tactics of the DNC. Our entire political system is broken.
As Toles’s alter ego points out: Mother Nature is Notre Dame. And as this incident reminds us, we will have to work hard and long to get her back to a state that’s not quite what was there before, though with luck and perseverance, it could be brought to a place that’s not worse than before.

Right on point Mr. Toles. I guess it would be more effective if polar bears caught fire.

If there were a newspaper publishing Earth news, it would be too depressing to read. Every day.

The Republicans abandonment of the Paris Accords shows the world that we are not the leaders anymore.

Notre Dame has been in existence for many centuries, it is truly a tragedy that it was damaged, but it will be rebuilt.

Can we meet the IPCC goal of 50% renewables by 2030, and 100% before 2050?
tl;dr Yes, we can. Yes, we will.
