Well, I’ll be …. Isn’t there some idea-generating source that all comic artists tap — some website that list topics? I’ve noticed for years that over a period of a week or two, several comics will riff on the same theme, and way too many at a time for the idea to have just naturally come up in everyone’s minds at the same time. As an example, I remember when the macarena dance popped up in 3 or 4 comics in the newspaper one day and continued like that each day for a week. Then over the course of a month, at least one cartoon would use the idea until it was finally played out.
