How in the world did you come to that conclusion from the cartoon? The cartoon make no such assertion. Has anybody, anywhere, said that driving impaired is ok?
Just remember one thing… Alcohol and Alcoholic Beverage Makers have a MUCH BIGGER AND MUCH RICHER Lobby in D.C. then the Pot Groups do, with a LOT more money for bribes…er…“Campaign Contributions” to make sure their pet Congresscritters vote the way THEY want them to.
And the truly “hilarious” part of the “demonization” of pot, a form of hemp, was that it was actively supported by the cotton industry because hemp was starting to make inroads into fabric manufacturing, and they were hoping to stigmatize ALL FORMS of hemp – and it worked!
Pot smoking was starting to move out of the “colored” community and be adopted by the “white kids” of America, so, even though pot wasn’t as addictive as tobacco (which isn’t saying much), and has never been proven to be a “gateway” drug in any way other than its acquisition forces people into contact with illegal dealers that also encouraged pot buyers to try more profitable forms of drugs, it was hounded into illegality!
Basically, the same argument used against marijuana can be applied with equal fervor toward tobacco, alcohol, coffee, tea and chocolate, all of which contain addictive substances!
If you truly wish to keep the criminalization of pot on the books, then both ethically and morally, the criminalization needs to be enlarged to cover the aforementioned products, as well – otherwise, you’re exposing yourself to charges of upmost hypocrisy!
jborg is the only one so far who’s commented on the racial aspect, which as I see it is the whole point of the cartoon: White and black people smoke pot whether it’s legal or not, but it’s mostly black people who get thrown in jail for it.
The legality (or not) of marijuana has always been used as a tool to push black folk lower. And keeping people incarcerated is good for the bottom line of the (majority white folk owned) businesses who charge to run the prisons, Seeing a pattern here?
As a pediatric oncologist and intermittent phantom pain sufferer I can only say that in my experience it has helped patients and myself. Like alcohol, I never use tin public nor do I operate any machinery more complicated than a fountain pen if under the influence. Gotta end this post, the brownies are done.

Legalization should always include the release of everyone who has been imprisoned for marijuana use (or sale, IMO).

I took the cartoon to be addressing the racial disparities in punishment, yet few even commented on this subject. Der Meisteraße über Alles?

I think it was Dick Gregory who said, “They called it weed in the ghetto but when it moved to the suburbs they called it grass.”
