I used to work in a call center so I tend to " tune people out". And my wife talks to the cats. So, when she talks to me, she usually has to get my attention first.
I have a deaf dog (she’s old, 15+). Taught her hand signals when it became obvious. Trouble is, I have to get her attention first. Hand clapping works for now.
My hearing has deteriorated as I’ve aged (and aged, and aged; if I were a wine, I’d be way past vintage). And it’s the voices of women that I seem to lose in the everyday background noise. If I can see them, I hear them just fine. But, if as here, I’m looking at something else, it’s rather like Charlie Brown in the principal’s office; “Wah-wah-wah-wahhh.”
My wife was after me for years to get hearing aids and three years ago I finally did. They haven’t really helped much as the only differences I’ve noticed so far are I now realize she often tries to talk to me from the other end of the house or as she’s walking away from me into another room. Even the audiologist admits hearing aids don’t help much in these cases other than enabling me to notice how often she does this.
My ex always seemed to think that it was my fault for not speaking up if he didn’t hear me. OTOH, it was my fault for not listening if I didn’t hear him. My mom can be that way sometimes too. Sigh.

You don’t get quieter, you just turn off your hearing aid to save on the batteries.

Oh, this is our house! Hubby has hearing aids but doesn’t always wear them, and I can’t tell if he does or not. Besides, he claims I whisper.

If this is quieter, she must have been really noisy as a kid.

I’m deaf in one ear and can’t hear out of the other.
My mother used to say:
" Yer like Billy Weir
What ye don’t want
Ye don’t hear
!"( Billie Weir – I learned – was a character in Portadown, NI, where my mother grew up, who went around town pretending to be deaf. )

That is me to my bride. She got some first rate hearing aids, but won’t wear them because the batteries cost money…and she’s not normally that frugal.

Overload. He probably didn’t catch that either.
