As far as most corporations are concerned, adults are robots.

Mostly to determine who has not achieved a very low standard.

Adult capable of building robots to make your life easier. Thus it worked for the teachers generation, standardizing made their work much easier.. little thinking or preparing class work required.. and marking test is now a snap.. just lay a template over the test.. note the standardized check marks.. something a robot can do.

When my mom was a teacher in Texas (back in the early 60s at Fort Hood, TX), she was allowed to teach the kids according to their ability. As long as the majority showed significant improvement (i.e., hit the grade-level benchmarks), she was left alone to teach. She had brilliant kids who were so far ahead that she would let them do things like evaluate new textbooks – they had to go thru each textbook, answer the questions, then compare them to the teacher’s key. They then had to write a report on whether they thought the textbook would be good for that grade level or not.

The regular kids, she taught as you would expect.

The slower kids were given more time and attention and were often helped by the regular or more advanced kids. Every year she proved her methods worked very well. Many times the slower kids were up to grade by the end of the year. I think there were only 2 who were held back, but they still restarted the next year ahead of where they started the year before and were able to stay with the class and move up.

All of these kids were from military families, so the slower ones were really disadvantaged by having to move from school to school.

The only thing standardized tests measure is how well you take a standardized test. Our girls are at university in England and they did not need any standardized test. Little school called Cambridge.
