Our 11 year old granddaughter has similar illusions, and hasn’t shown a whole lot more talent than Katy yet

I went into her room one day and asked her if she was torturing one of the cats

She pretended to be offended, but she knows her grandpa

As someone whose singing could strip the paint off a rusty car, I can sympathize with the situation.

We used to have a woman at our church who could not sing, and admitted it gracefully. One year, on the first Sunday in Lent, our rector insisted she chant one of the psalms. “No, no. I can’t do that!”

“Oh, heavens! Anybody can chant. You don’t need to sing.”

Well, she couldn’t chant any better than the could sing. It was, frankly, dreadful. Even the rector admitted it. The poor woman claimed we had all had our ultimate dose of Lenten Discipline, and thanked us all for not fleeing the sanctuary in terror.

One beanbag chair is not enough. Gumbo should try to find the beanbag warehouse.

Our former church pianist/choir director was wonderful at both tasks; and yet her singing was an assault on the ears.

These days, no one HAS to sing well to put out music. They just autotune the person to heck and back.

I saw an interview between Barbara Walters had with Elton John many moons ago, he tried to sing by himself and could not carry a tune. But we know that, when he’s playing piano with the backup music and singers, he’s quite good. So, there may be hope for Katy.

For now, Gumbo may be your out. Explain to Katy that a dog’s sense of hearing is many times more sensitive than humans and appeal to her sense of humanity.

I tried out singing with a band, way back- but they wanted a high pitched Led Zep kind of screamer, not a singer.

Perhaps she doesn’t clearly hear tones.
