Quilting used to be a long, slow process, using fabric scraps, and recycled materials from old clothes. It was also completely done by hand (no machines.) Machine quilting is more like cheating, unless you are doing it to earn some extra money, or giving it as a special gift.
She still has the backing and batting. Our neighbor had a quilt frame hanging in her front room. I would go help her sew it together. I don’t remember her having a machine though.I just remember the whole quilt put together in the frame. Husbands mom made a lot of quilts. I think that art has gone to machines now.
Long ago and far away, a coworker offered me two quilt tops she had found in her mother’s stash. She knew I had two daughters and appreciated hand work, and I was deeply pleased to get them. I asked my grandmother if she’d take them to the local Lutheran Home for the Aged to have them quilted. I knew this wasn’t a job that got done in a weekend, so it was a good while before I asked her about them.
“Oh, you never mentioned them again and I thought you’d lost interest. I gave one of them away.” If I could have reached through the phone I’d have strangled her and laughed about it.
I was bemoaning this treachery to my mum, and she asked me to described the quilt. “I know what happened to it. She gave it to your sister as a wedding present. I asked her where she got it and she just shrugged and said ‘Oh, I fell heir to it’.” Grrr.
Ever notice that Betty tends to immerse herself in whatever her current interest is, and then we never see it again. Wasn’t too long ago she ran a marathon. In her first week she did 5K, which it took me several months to work up to. Now she is into quilting. What’s next? Gamma ray engineering? (Do not make Betty angry! You would not LIKE Betty angry!)
