I can relate! At only 5’ tall, there are still things I have trouble seeing. I also have to have my younger daughter reach top-shelf things for me in the supermarket.
I remember this strip well and its wonderful reminder of a time when I had to stand on tip toes and still couldn’t see over the top of the shelf. Interesting that Lucy doesn’t appear to try that nor grip the edge of the counter to pull oneself up a bit. I loved our neighborhood delicatessen for its glass fronted counters, and the candy stores made sure we could always see the candy bars at eye level.
I don’t remember counter like this. My earliest memory though is of either my father or one of my uncles handing me a knitted sack (think like onions come in now) of wooden alphabet blocks. To me they were way up high. To this day I still see them removed from the shelf and making the journey into my hands, I just don’t know who it was giving them to me!

I like looking at Legos at the store even if I don’t want to buy any

That reminds me of the toy department at Woolworth’s.

But you’ll be a total fussbudget by then, Lucy!

Lucy looked at what I would have looked at. Even if I could see above the counter.

I remember the dime store from my childhood (1960s) like I was just there yesterday. It had the same type of layout.

Right now, I’m listening to Bryan Adams, who once mentioned buying his first real six string at the five and dime.

Does anyone remember T. G. & Y., a mid west “dime store?” :-)

Lucy – ever the realist. You can see why she went in to psychiatry.

This one has always been one of my favourites. Lucy’s remarks are priceless.
