In Flanders fields the poppies blowBetween the crosses, row on row, That mark our place, and in the sky, The larks, still bravely singing, fly, Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the dead; short days agoWe lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lieIn Flanders fields.
French President Emmanuel Macron was directly on target yesterday. He said, “Patriotism is the exact opposite of nationalism. Nationalism is a betrayal of patriotism. By saying our interests come first, who cares about the others, we erase what a nation holds dearest, what gives it life, what makes it great and what is essential: its moral values.”
You just had to add that last paragraph, didn’t you. So, what was a beautiful tribute became a snarky tirade. No wonder I stopped reading this strip years ago, and wouldn’t have today if it weren’t on GoComics home page.
Macron continued, "I know there are old demons which are coming back to the surface. They are ready to wreak chaos and death. History sometimes threatens to take its sinister course once again.”
Many years ago when I was young I worked as maintenance man in a hotel, for many years there they had hosted members of the 36th Infantry Division who were know as the Texas Division and for several yrs I got to know several of them and many long conversations with them even though I wasn’t supposed to, listen to stories of battle field horrors and how friend’s were lost and even the liberation of a concentration camp, I learned of friends who died. But what I remember most was the two times I called them hero’s only to be corrected with; No son we’re not hero’s the hero’s are the friends we left there.
A fine picture. Are the words Pab Sungenis’ own, or a quotation? I think they are fine, except maybe for the last two lines. “it is preferable to die alone…” ¿ Where does that come from? Since in war so many people die in the midst of other people.
Even though, or perhaps because, it is 4 years 5 months later, Franz Ferdinand and his wife died in the midst of other people. His (lucky) assassin Gavrilo Princip escaped the death penalty because he was a minor, less than age of adulthood 21 years. He was put in prison. Hard time that got harder as everyone in Austro-Hungary suffered from the hardships of war. He contracted TB and died during the war, and was buried in an unmarked grave. Sympathetic Czechs among the prison staff made note of where he was buried and after the war Czechoslovakia dug him up and repatriated his remains to the new Yugoslavia as a national hero to both of them.

Always remember, that for some, wars can make you very very rich. And they aren’t the poor schlubs on the battlefields.

Strange how a comedy series could have one of the MOST poignant moments about war EVER…

We don’t “chose to die alone” we chose to protect our country and family with God making the final determination. Terrible poem.

Veteran’s Day about all those who serve and served. Memorial day is of the Military Dead.
However the sentiments are true for both. Armistice Day came a year too late but better than in 1919.

Wrong. The simple truth is that some people will make the ultimate sacrifice to stop evil from prevailing.

As a retired USAF officer who has witnessed fellow vets being interred at Arlington National Cemetery, I found this tribute quite moving.
