There are plenty of arguments to be made for allowing asylum seekers entry in this country. Many of them are women with babies, they wouldn’t make the trip if it wasn’t absolutely necessary. They are coming from places which are extremely dangerous, they are desperate. In the US, we consider ourselves to have the ideals of being a nation which accepts immigrants, we were founded by immigrants. Immigrants do jobs in the US which Americans won’t do, and we need them desperately. They pick our fruit, they care for our elderly, they care for our babies, etc. We are a nation of immigrants, we always have been since our founding.
No matter what lies the right spews, no one is in favor of totally open borders and a lack of vetting for those who seek to relocate to the U.S.A. No one has ever said “Just let them all come on in!” But according to the fearful on the right, the left wants to let in Millions just for the sole purpose of disposing of those on the right. Such a sad little mindset they live in.
Here’s how you do it, “jlocke.” Comprehensive immigration reform would have to be debated and passed into law without racist, alarmist histrionics. No, you don’t take everyone. Yes, in my view, you should tilt the playing field to get more educated people (who, by virtue of their education would keep you regressives at bay), yes to asylum (but we might want to stop destabilizing their countries, too), paths to citizenship for those who work, pay taxes, and are law abiding, guest worker permits, more employer enforcement, and on and on, the commonsense debate “could” result in a good piece of legislation.
But racist demonization and fear mongering is the regressive choice. Naturally.
Lock her up! Very good Nazis! Obama was a Kenyan Muslim! Body slam reporters! Fake news! On and on trump spreads his virus, and people like “jlocke” eat it up.
You know, jlocke, it’s gotten down to a very basic moral choice in this country, which you do not seem to comprehend. I would suggest you examine your basic premises before you pass any more judgement on the rest of us. You are supporting an executive built on lies and lacking in any empathy or decency, any humanitarian objectives at all, flavored with a strong stench of fake victimhood to justify its actions. How can you support these people and still live with yourself?
A year or so ago a young man from Mexico was sent to install some carpet. While he was working, we chatted. He said in Mexico the drug lords come to your house and tell you that you will join them or the police force. That way they have an “in” if one of them gets arrested.
If you say No, they shoot you. Right then, right there.
“After I lost a second amigo I decided to leave the country. I’m not married so I didn’t put my wife or children in danger, so I could go without getting them shot, too.”
This is why people are coming here. We may have more gun violence than Europe or Australia, but it’s still safer than anyplace in Central America.
