I recently had a tire that did the same thing. All of the tread separated from the tire. Not supposed to happen on a new tire. All of that tire rubber on the highways is from large trucks. A lot of the tires on their truck and trailers are retread tires. Much cheaper.
That happened to me twice. Once about 25 years ago and again this year. The first one did not lose the tread, only a section of it came loose. Try driving down the shoulder with the flap of the tire hitting the outside of the trunk floor. I had no jack or spare in the trunk at the time. The time it happened this year, the entire tread came off the tire. Surprising thing is the tire never went flat. When the tire was taken off the car, the tire separated just where the steel belts were. Tore up the plastic on the back corner of the car. This is not supposed to happen to good tires.
