Preserving our current inefficient, expensive system is not the solution either. We need real fiscal conservatives in government that know the difference between assets (health, education, research) and liabilities (military spending, selling assets to a private corporation, etc).
" …
The report, from the libertarian Mercatus Center, found that Sanders’ plan to extend Medicare to all Americans would increase federal healthcare costs by $32.6 trillion from 2022 to 2031 if implemented as written.
…
… the cost for the federal government tells only part of the story. The government is one piece of the health-system puzzle.
The Department of Health and Human Services also measures the total amount spent on healthcare in the US, including by states, private citizens, the federal government, businesses, and more. This all-encompassing number is known as the national health expenditure, or NHE.
According to the Mercatus model, total health spending would actually come in about $303 billion lower in 2031 than under current projections, with $7.35 trillion going to healthcare that year versus $7.65 trillion expected now. Total national health spending would be $2 trillion lower from 2022 to 2031 under the plan, the report found.
Yes, please! I’ll take healthcare and education. You can keep space force, over-bloated military spending and tax cuts for the rich who don’t need them.
Total U.S. discretionary spending by the Generals & Admirals is about 54% of the budget.
Total U.S. discretionary spending on Medicare & health is about 6% of the budget.
Medicare per capita spending was down from 7.3 percent between 2000 and 2010, to 1.5 percent between 2010 and 2017 – due in part to the Affordable Care Act’s reductions in payments to providers and plans.
When your insurance company & hospital grossly overcharges you and/or your employer it is perfectly legal.
When your insurance company & hospital grossly overcharges Medicare they are committing a crime.
It’s crazy to let mega-profit corporations steal from us with no oversight. Sooner or later all Americans need healthcare, and are going to have to pay for it. Our government’s primary function is to defend the people’s life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness. Maybe we should rename Medicare Defense Spending.
Funny (in the strange way) how Trump’s minions like Ramirez completely ignore the fact the current cost to the American public far exceeds that 32.6 Trillion investment. Ramirez also pretends, like conservatives do, that Social Security we have been investing into all our working lives is also meant for the ultra-rich and corporate welfare.
What the conservatives conveniently neglect to say is that $32.6 trillion price tag on Medicare-for-all is a couple of trillion dollars less than we are currently spending on health care.
Solve the health care problem. Install a 10% tax on everything, no exceptions, and no special class that doesn’t have to pay it. Strict controls on the money to prevent politicians from raiding the funds. Use the money for nationalised health care with laws that prevent sale of pharmaceuticals unless they abide by federal rules. Elective treatments would be totally the individuals responsibilities and spell those out as to what is ‘elective’. If you want, make the plan and do a media blitz explaining it to the public, then have a mandatory election. With everybody having a chip in the pot maybe they would be more responsible about their health. Every five years do an evaluation of the funding needs and adjust the percentage up or down as needed. I bet it would fail in the vote because a lot of Americans have an entitled attitude, and when they realize they have to pony up 10% instead of someone giving them everything they will say NO.
People like Ramirez should be thankful they can afford GOOD health care. Most average Americans are 1 major health incident away from bankruptcy. Profits over health care, hell profits over anything that matters should be the rights new motto.
Without good health care quality of life is reduced. Without good health care productivity is reduced and business suffers. Without good health care the overall quality of candidates for military service is reduced, leaving America more vulnerable.
America needs a comprehensive health care program like those of other developed countries.
If America’s military budget was more in line with defence and not power projection across the world, maybe there would be less inclination towards mistakes like invading Iraq and destabilizing the Middle East.
It would be wise if America used some of the military budget on developing new energy sources, alternative fuels and energy independence. You can’t run any current tank or military aircraft without fossil fuels, and if you’ve pumped and fracked all of the fossil fuels out of the ground, you’re vulnerable to supply problems.

That’s right Mr. Ramirez; that money is suppose to go to the military and the ultra rich.

$32.6 trillion, huh? I’ll bet I’ve spent at least that much on healthcare in my lifetime.

$32.6 trillion sounds like about the same amount as the rich-guy tax cuts.

Do right wingers have any explanation for why the US is the only developed country that cannot (according to them) afford universal health care?

Giving money to the government for medical care: Socialism (Which is bad)!
Giving even more money to insurance companies: Capitalism (which is good)!
