“If I had to choose between government without newspapers, and newspapers without government, I would not hesitate to choose the latter.” —Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826), 3rd US president
“Think of the press as a great keyboard on which the government can play.”
“Not every item of news should be published. Rather must those who control news policies endeavor to make every item of news serve a certain purpose.”
“The essence of propaganda consists in winning people over to an idea so sincerely, so vitally, that in the end they succumb to it utterly and can never escape from it.”
Here’s some advice for you, Mr. Democracy. Don’t press your luck. Lay off of me. Don’t print that story.
What’s that supposed to be? An order?
If not tonight, then tomorrow. Maybe next week. Maybe next year. But sooner or later, you’ll catch it! Listen to me! Print that story, you’re a dead country!
It’s not just me anymore. You’d have to stop every newspaper in the country now, and you’re not big enough for that job. People like you have tried it before, with bullets, prison, censorship… but as long as even one newspaper will print the truth, you’re finished.
Don’t give me that fancy double-talk! I want an answer. Yes or no? Yes or no? Hey! That noise. What’s that racket?
That’s the press, Donald, the press. And there’s nothing you can do about it. Nothing.
Hey Doonesbury is back! Today it is complete with a trump supporter who lives in a trailer. I hope you guys head over there. You can always ignore the Russian bots in the comments.
The irony of “jlocke” castigating a member of the press is just amazing considering how much he seems to enjoy incivility from his psychopathic leader.
I have one republican senator and I typically call his office 2-3 times a week to petition the government. That’s my Constitutional right. I usually ask the interns who answer the phones if they’re ashamed at being in the party of such a prodigious liar as trump. I ask them if they lie to the senator that way, and if their parents have always encouraged lying as a default behavior.
They are silent about this. I try to shame them. And it works. On a one on one basis, they become sheepish. Not apologetic, that’s too much cognitive dissonance. But sheepish, and, rightfully ashamed. All you trump synchophants should be ashamed of yourselves. If, for no other reason than supporting someone who has so far told 4,000 verified lies since inauguration.
I am thrilled the press is after the truth. While faux news isn’t, of course, the WSJ continues to report responsibly, even if the editorials are way off kilter, in my view. The press needs to continue to demand answers.
Trump is a sad wanabee trying curry favor with those men he admires.. and besides being the laughing stock of the rest of the world is taking his country down with him.
Personally, I feel sorry for Putin, reduced to riding (in the words of conservative icon George Will) “a sad embarrasing wreck of a man.” Then again, a poor rider blames his mount….By the way, people, the reporter in question was a POOL reporter, asking exactly the questions that the other (legitimate) journalists would have asked, themselves, were the attendance not limited, as it frequently is.

@jlocke – “A rude and obnoxious reporter got her privileges revoked. The paper she work for didn’t. Why the outrage?”
Your failure to grasp basic logical reasoning makes for a poor defense of Tяump’s strong-arm tactics.
“…no law respecting … the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people…to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”
At least half of the people want an honest answer to that reporter’s question, and consider it obnoxious that their president is a liar.
Reporters have been shouting questions at presidents for 50 years. What makes Tяump so snow-flaky?

Then Trump elevates these right wing trash press people who throw softball questions to him that he rehearsed already.
Remember when Russian spy girl asked Trump a question about Russian relations and Trump had a ready answer for her?
