Lefty’s Fireworks! That’s almost as good as Tom Threefingers or One-eyed Jack’s Fireworks. (One-eyed Jack really did wear an eyepatch.)

After all of the fireworks I shot while a boy and before they outlawed almost all of the ones we enjoyed I no longer had/have the desire to shoot any today. Back then fireworks were cheap (even if we didn’t have much money they were still affordable) , powerful but most of all dangerous. Many of my friends had scars to prove how dangerous they were but we had a ball with them. Now even the legal fireworks are outlawed in most states and in those that do allow them they are illegal in almost every city so I will just have to watch the professionals.

One year, my dad got a license from the city to set off fireworks, and he gave a show on the fourth. That was a good year…

Three years ago in our neighborhood a house fire was started that way. No matter how many Public Safety announcements to go the local park and/or keep the works far away from the house, there are around this time, some dufuses who will set off their fire works in their postage stamp back yards aiming them the wrong way.

With all the illegal aerial fireworks from Mexico and China set off in the last several years here, the legal kind seem quaint. It’s “shock and awe” here in Southern California every July 4th.

Everything fireworks – including sparklers – have always been illegal in my home state. We normally go away to another state for the holiday where the smaller items have been legal. There is not much noticeable personal fireworks set off there on the 4th. This year we had stay home. OH MY GOD!! This year the state legalized sparkler and other non-arial fireworks, but our county and the surrounding counties and cities did not. It was horrible. Two hours of noise and arial fireworks ! Houses here are small plots – in our area less than 60 × 100 – and people were shooting the fireworks over their houses! I was terrified that something would come down on our house from a neighbor’s fireworks and burn the house down. I don’t want to go through this again in the future, but I am also now terrified to go away and leave my house subject to this.
