    Some Summer Reading Lists are just an amount of time, or a number of pages, or seeing how many books you can read in a certain time. Libraries often have contests for kids for the latter. Our daughter loved our Library’s summer reading program.

    I took a class on science fiction in high school. Read the entire text book / anthology over a weekend.

    Those of us who were raised without exposure to turnips could only guess at the depth of that rejoinder. You could write a short story to rival any from the dust bowl era. Turnips of Wrath, which sounds even more dark than any grapes.

    That’s a relief about the book being science fiction, I thought it was a biography. That would border on child cruelty.

    I went to a number of different schools as a kid. Never did we have a summer reading list or even reading “time”.
