It’s a shame we can’t deport that slug in the White House.

I guess the concept of cruel and unusual punishment is to hard for those repubs to understand.

Honor is a nebulous and mostly foreign concept for Republicans these days. So are morals, although they seem quite enamored of the concept of other people’s morals. And they also seem to have no memories. Mostly forgetting all that moral stuff they spouted to their constituents. They are all traitors to the US, and if we replaced them with DACA recipients, we would be a better country for it.

Republicans lie about everything including being patriots and loving the troops. What they love is the kickbacks from the Military/Industrial complex.

Service to our country should absolutely be one of the roads to citizenship. Especially for those born in this country who would lie to avoid it. Talking to you President “Bone Spurs”.

I served in the military and the first thing that you learn is to follow the law and the rules. If you don’t like the law then change it legally otherwise quit your whining. If you want to blame someone blame their parents who brought them here illegally.

I spent nearly 25 years in the Army, served with all kinds of immigrants, from all over the world. Walk through any military installation and it’s like a microcosm of America, where the Melting Pot does its REAL fusion. Immigrants make America stronger, I don’t care their legal status. Our current immigration policy is regressive, it does not fulfill its function. It promotes, rather than stems illegal immigration. It turns good people into criminals. We need these people, and we need a new immigration policy.

I know that I am a bit old; however, wasn’t there a time when military service was a path to citizenship? Anyone?

I’m really surprised that the President, a man with no discernible skills, is pushing so vociferously for merit-based immigration. And no, possessing money is NOT a skill.

Trump sends out tweets that claim Dems are pushing for ALL illegal immigrants, when this is limited to DACA. This issue was going to be resolved by bipartisan proposal brought by Durbin and Graham, but more xenophobic Repubs talked Trump into breaking his promise to accept bipartisan measure.

.The military does NOT need to be increased. Stop building things that the Pentagon doesn’t even want (tanks), stop developing new jets that are beyond any reasonable advances in technology to replace jets that didn’t work because they were too advanced, stop making missiles that cost $800K EACH. Pentagon and DoD need a complete audit and I’m sure there will be enough waste found to greatly improve the VA while providing plenty for defense.

Why is there no statute of limitations on illegal immigration but there is on almost all other crimes? And in this case, the person does not bear the responsibility for his illegal immigration. Had he been legally in the country, serving in the military would automatically have given him the option of citizenship. Should this option not also be granted to the Dreamers?

While POTUS “bone spur” was playing “military school”, dodging the draft, and practicing up on his dispicable preferences, I served in ’Nam with a number of guys getting citizenship by fighting for the country, several had been brought by their parents as little kids, and recruiters helped them waiver and join up.

Years later, one of my son’s Navy buddies in Bosnia and elsewhere, had special qualifications for SpecOps, as he had first served in such capacity, as a RUSSIAN citizen. HE became an American citizen, Trump acts like he wants to be a “Putin Puppy” puttin’ on the Ritz, from Trump tower.

Maybe we should look to Trump and Kushner to serve for THEIR fathers’ crimes, and put ‘em both in Gitmo. Makes more sense than deporting a 30 year resident and taxpayer, married to a US citizen, and father of US citizens, to a country he’s never really known.

Trump loves the military so much he attacks POWs and Gold Star families. The government shuts down so the military doesn’t get paid. Wants to cut troops who aren’t the kind of people he doesn’t agree with. Will kick all the patriotic immigrants out.

I don’t think he loves the military, he just wants to drop bombs on his enemies here and abroad.

American secret political and military interference in the governments in Mexico, and farther south, has resulted in political and economic failures and unrest in those countries. The refugees are an end result of America’s activities, and to pretend we didn’t have a part in creating the poverty and violence is simply ignorant.

Enlisting and serving in the military should automatically give them citizenship upon completing their tour of duty.

    Conservative pundit Michael Gerson:

Trump has revealed who he is. Now we reveal who we are. The perfunctory criticisms, self-indicting silences, half-hearted defenses and obvious lies provided by most elected Republicans have been embarrassing and discrediting. Loyalty to Trump now consists of defending the indefensible. His advocates are becoming desensitized to moral corruption. They are losing the ability to believe in anything, even in their own courage.

Yet some Republicans and conservatives will never be reconciled with a Trump presidency. The reason is not one of tender sensibilities, but of deep conviction. Racism is not a single issue among many, to be weighed equally with tax or trade policy. Trump is at war with the central ideal of the Republic — a vision of strength through inclusion and equality that makes our country special and exceptional. The president is wrong — repeatedly and offensively wrong — on the centerpiece question of our history: Are there gradations in the image of God? The only acceptable, only American answer is “no.”

I’m a retired Naval Officer— I started out as an enlisted HM3. I also spent two years as a Peace Corps volunteer.

When I compare the DACA Dreamers who joined the military to defend the nation they love to some of their critics, people whose sole service to America is when they’ve (grudgingly) paid their taxes, I find it very easy to choose between them.

nsfh12’s saying that he learned in the military that following laws and rules was paramount brought to mind the Nuremberg trials, where the judges made clear that “just following orders” is inadequate as a defense. The orders, laws or rules must be moral. Immoral laws or orders are NOT to be followed by members of the military.

Which brings me back, full circle, to an essential question. Who is the better American— the person born here, but whose entire career, entire life, has been centered on himself and his own desires, or the person born on the other side of the border and brought here, who is now volunteering to serve in the military to defend the nation he loves? Is the first person “more American” just for being born here?
