In an epidemiological context, it’s at least 9 years old (example, article in Math Biosci. April 2011 Effect of media-induced social distancing on disease transmission in a two patch setting) So unless your “jerks of the world” include professional epidemiologists, you can still not like the term but don’t claim someone pulled it out of their rectum. (I thought Google had a feature that allows you to check the use of a term or word over time but I forget how to get to it)
