Workplace violence. I guess that we should feel lucky that they are just dishes.

In terms of reports of “flying saucers” in radio news broadcasts and the newswafers of the day, “flying” or at least airborne dishes in 1950 just kind of works as an optical pun in panel number three.

As for workplace violence, isn’t that stuff as old as dirt?

Pretty fast work. This strip was published less than three years after the first known use of the term “flying saucer.” Soon, pretty much every report of unknown flying objects used the term. But the pilot who was the source of the term“saucer” never used it to describe the shape of the things he’d seen. He was describing their movement, which he said was like “a saucer if you skip it across water.”

Power of suggestion on a mass scale?

As many saucers as he’s throwing, the diner better be successful enough to cover the cost of getting new ones!

The first use of the term was probably in 1947 with the Kenneth Arnold and Roswell events. By 1952 the phrase and sightings of UFOs were very well known in the US.
