I never would have pegged Sluggo as a straight-A student. I’m delighted that Bushmiller would make the tough-talkin’ street kid with patches on his clothes and who lives in a hovel be one.

Getting high or low marks in class is familiar to me. And they are marks which is a generic reference here.
