We have an avian character present. I’ve notice some discussion of the lack of birds other than young Chic.

Refusing to put on weight is her only hope of staying alive. Congratulations on Mister Neathery for writing a change of pace with an (albeit bizarre) crime mystery.

Neil Wick over on the Dick Tracy forum has created a bunch of useful widgets for all of you who hate the new layout of GoComics. Feel free to share these with your friends on other strips. You can find them here along with instructions on how to use them:

If that’s a bowl of soup, how can Walt make Portia eat a bite of it?

If there’s a “moment” I don’t think it’s a romantic one. Portia is showing signs of being threatened or terrorized. Walter has just threatened her (regardless of his reasons). I think Portia’s expression in panel 3 is a “just slapped in the face” one. And in panel 4, I think Walter recognized it, and realized what he’s done.

Walt: “Look, Portia, you’re important to us. You’re important to the entire colony. So, please eat. Eat everything in the bowl. Now, on a side note, what do you know about bait?”

@*RickD*: Of concern is Portia’s expression in panel 3. With her snout pointed down, there are many, myself included, who might think that this was a coy smile. Given the context of the situation, your analysis would seem to be more accurate – that Walt has just terrorized her, without knowing it and having good intentions.

By now, readers would appear to know “what” is going on and “how” it is being done. However, Neathery has done an excellent job of obfuscating “who” is doing it. And, for all we know, the incident with the wolves at the beginning of this arc was a “red herring.”

Most peculiar about this arc is Neathery’s choice of pigs as the victims. We live in a society, a world, where prejudice and discrimination against fat people is out-and-out encouraged, and the basis of a billion dollar multi-national business, raking in as much, if not more, money than we give to our military. Money that comes from its victims.

Early on, when I first stated these concerns, someone thought that, if Neathery was including these themes, that it would “cheapen” the story. I think not; however, it is far too early to determine whether this is where he is going with this story.

But one thing for sure, having chosen pigs as the protaginists and victims in this story, Neathery is also exposing the prejudice rampant against fat people. Just look at all the pig jokes in the comments. I’m sure those same jokes just wouldn’t be funny if these weren’t pigs.

(Of course, I would pick a day to comment when there aren’t as many pig and bacon jokes as there have been in the not-to-distant past)

From my point of view it looks like she is trying to get Walt to realize what is going on, sort of a “you know what’s happening so please don’t make me eat” I could be dead wrong as Aaron is wonderful with his misdirection and depth of character.

I think it’s nothing more complex at this point than that she is not in her right mind.

It seems to me that Portia is blushing in panel 3 and Walter is in panel 4.The significance of these blushes, on the other hand, is open to interpretation.
