That’s pretty much what convinced me. When I was a kid (mid-60s), my parents took me to the Museum of Science in Boston … and in somewhat enlightened fashion for the times, they had an anti-smoking display of three autopsied lungs. One was a healthy, pink lung taken from someone who’d died in an auto accident. One was from someone who died of lung cancer (a misshapen, sickly yellow thing). The third was from someone who died of emphysema (a shrunken, black thing). I needed no more convincing that smoking was a terrible thing to do!
My husband started smoking at 15. When we became serious, he promised to cut down, and he did…but didn’t quit. When our first daughter was born (when my husband was 42), he stopped smoking in the apartment & would go outside. Soon after our second daughter was born…he just stopped. He pulled his pack out, looked at it…and threw it away. That was about 14 years ago, and he hasn’t had a puff since.
All you Vapers out there are you paying attention? Your habit is just as bad, or was there something about “Nicotine is a Poison” you didn’t understand?
I liked this comic when it ran on how Binkley (Does anyone remember his first name?) cured his father of smoking. Even funnier was when Opus was stuck with Steve trying to cure Steve of smoking, Steve tied to a chair, an axe in his mouth, chasing Opus around the house was a funny image I still have in my head.
I have always thought they should appeal to a person’s vanity. Show two photos: a normal woman at 35 years old, and a smoker at 35 years old. The smoker looking a dried-up, unhealthy 50 years old just might sink in. But I doubt it. Someone who starts smoking in the first place in this day isn’t likely going to listen to any kind of common sense. It’s that peer pressure thing. No warning label is as powerful.

As kids we used to roll our own, except with paper bag material and dried cornsilk! That cured us pretty quickly!
