This would be mymom. Every time I turn around in her kitchen (I cook for my parents) she is cleaning the utensils and anything else I am trying to use.
Must be a form of OCD. I have relatives like that, they seem overly nervous if just one thing has a crumb in it and work themselves into a frenzy if you don’t do the same.
This is my wife. She cleans the counter around what i’m mixing. getting new spoons throwing stuff away the second i’m done with it and getting new spoons when the dog and I taste stuff.. .
Our eldest is almost this bad. When she was five or six, I’d get out all the things I needed to make a cake, for instance, and if I was interrupted, she’d start putting things away.
I’m not this bad, but I do like to clean up as I cook, but mainly big things like pots and mixing bowls. I don’t use a dishwasher (drought in CA), and the sink/counter can fill up pretty quickly.
On the flip side it’s nice that when you are done if some one cleans up after you. Key point being, after, not during or before. That being said I am a clean as you go person when I am cooking, so the “pile” doesn’t get too large.
I’m guessing OCD. Why would she take it out of the pot, wash it,then give it back to Arlo? Then again maybe she’s turning the table on Arlo, trying to annoy him in little ways to get attention.
See, for me, as long as I am the chef for the day, I greatly appreciate my wife being my “Sous-Chef”. She tends to be more than willing (most days) to help with the chopping, sorting, organizing, and cleaning aspects associated with my culinary creations. I would, like Arlo, think it a bit odd to wash a spoon that was in the pot for stirring, but no real harm done. Also, gladly, my wife does not like me being her “Sous-Chef” when she is the chef for the day. She is fussier than I am (like Janis) and does not appreciate my “help” so I go relax on the couch on her days.
I took over the dish cleaning when I got tired of the sink always being full, but I wait until we are done eating before I clear the table. I took over the laundry when I got tired of not having clean clothes.

When my sister and I were younger, if we ate at her place, she’d grab the dishes and wash them before I was finished with my dinner.
At my place she’d complain cos I hadn’t washed the dishes “yet” while I thought we were pleasantly lingering at the table.
There can never ever ever be a dish waiting in the sink.

I can’t tell if she is heading into OCD, just bored out of her skull, or making a point….

OCD. Grandson has it and does similar tasks. Just grin and go along.

I’m surprised Janis didn’t throw out the chipped mug Arlo had in his hand,
