Stone Soup by Jan Eliot Holly: Phil, can we talk? Phil: Sure, Holly! What's up? Holly: It's about our allowance... Phil: OK...how much do you get? Holly: I get $15, Alix gets $10. Alix: Which is TOTALLY unfair. Holly: BUT...we haven't had a cost-of-living raise in FOREVER. Phil: Um... Holly: You're new to this so I made a chart. Phil: ? Phil: Your cost of living went up 75%?? Holly: Demand increased to fill supply. Alix: Your wallet is fatter than Mom's.

My allowance was $0.10/week when I grew up. I’m 88 so you can figure what the country was going through then.

Hey I’m retired and still give myself a modest allowance that has to last me all month.

I remember mine as a quarter. Got a job for fifty cents an hour when I was 15. I felt like I was rolling in dough.

I’m 69. When I was 13 I got $1.00 for babysitting on Saturday night. Monday morning I went to our local record store and bought the latest 45 and still had enough for french fries and a coke. Hard to believe. A local merchant was telling me that he used to deal with $10.00 bills, then $20.00 bills and now it’s $50.00. He’s noticed the change just in this last few months.

Back in the 80’s, I occasionally had a $100 bill in my wallet. True, it usually went straight from the bank to the grocery store, but it was there for a while. It then went to twenties, then tens and now I rarely have a dollar in my wallet. Of course I have my debit card, but somehow the greenbacks would feel good to keep it company.

When I was a kid, we didn’t get an allowance. If we wanted spending money, we had to earn it.

You’re right, girls. This is totally unfair. We’re starting a new system. It’s called chores. You get paid for each one you do.

Because Phil is a step dad only. The girls did have a dad who died.

Because he is not thier “dad”. If he married mom when they were 3 and 5, maybe, but marrying into the family of a teen and preteen, he is lucky to even be spoken to.
