Val: Have you started that book for English class? Holly: I'm working on it. Val: Don't leave it to the last minute, OK? Holly: Yeah yeah. Val: And don't look for Cliffs Notes online...or ask Aunt Joan for a summary... Holly: SHEESH. Paint me into a corner, why don't ya?! Val: Just read the book!!

I don’t know why she’s so reluctant to read the assigned book. Reading’s fun and enjoyable!

During my school years I did not have any problem reading any book, except assigned ones.

I loved to read in high school and college, but I always hated the stuff assigned in English class. I think it was because the classic novels, like “The Great Gatsby” and “Catcher in the Rye”, were filled with adult themes and lifestyles that I couldn’t relate to. The first classic novel I actually enjoyed and appreciated was “The Grapes of Wrath”, and that was in college English. I was old enough to appreciate it by that time. Shakespeare was always a chore, starting in ninth grade, because you practically had to look up every word in a translation dictionary to understand it. I did come to appreciate the archetypal cultural themes and stories in Shakespeare as I got older, but I didn’t much like reading the plays at the time. It was too much work, when I’d rather be reading a Star Trek book or a David Eddings fantasy epic.

I also love to read, but an assigned book? My mind would start to wander within the first paragraph. I had to read “Middlemarch” in college, and about lost my mind, dragging through that thing. Shakespeare wasn’t too bad, as it is contemporaneous with the KJV, and most people are at least familiar with the stories, if not the words.

For me what books is Holly suppose to read? I feel in mourning when SS goes only Sunday wonder how long that will last. Also we do not know what dinner Phil cooked was.

How else would any Charles Dickens novel get read? This is what you get when you get paid by the word.

Edumuffakation is tuff. Here’s your shovel. Try to remember it’s serial number. It has something to do with your retirement. You’ll be using it a LOT in later life.
