“War on coal”? What exactly is the message here, that the world (Obama or otherwise) should keep burning fossil fuels until there is no air left fit to breathe?
That is obviously false. Go look at the Dept of Labor statistics. Just population growth over 30 years would grow the number substantially. Your comment makes no sense.
The war on coal started long along when fungi acquired a taste for fallen trees. Before that they left the fallen trees alone to become coal. It became a finite resource unlike sun, wind, tide, and geothermal.
What’s Payne saying? Is he asking us to compare the War on Iraq to the War on Coal? Is he asking us if it’s better to be legless than jobless? I’m puzzled.
Payne, the next picture over shows “War on Science” with a typical Tea Bag GOP numbnuts in the photo. Underneath is a dead body with a sign saying “Lifeless.”
War on coal? What about the war on whale oil? Or wood burning steam engines? How about the war on kerosene? We need to nurse along all those obsolete and otherwise extinct energy sources! Put whalers and wood cutters out of business? For shame, Obama, for shame! Seriously folks, the Senators from my state, Kentucky, need to be crafting legislation to replace coal and create new jobs for miners, rather than nursing an old, outmoded and filthy energy source along.
Would it be better to be without your legs (just how would uou get new ones?) than to be without employement, which you can look for work while collecting unemployment? I personally think I would like to keep my legs!!
If the coal industry itself could come up with methodologies to make coal as clean as natural gas at least, then use coal by all means! It would probably be impossible to make coal as clean as wind or solar, just as it would also be impossible to make even cleaner burning natural gas as clean as solar or wind also.
I love it when some say that future gnerations are going ot be so mad at us because we left them with a large debt load while ignoring the fact that they are going to be far more angry with our generation for leaving them with an earth where they can not breath the air, drink the water , or even live on the polluted land!!
War on Iraq, see, that was a good war. Got people killed, took a lot of legs. This here thing with the coal is bad, because it costs mine owners some money as they continue to fight a rearguard action on their dying industry.
Mechanization, and mountain top removal mining are responsible for the job losses in the coal industry, and Murray mining is pretty good at ignoring safety and killing or crippling miners, and well, then add in the destruction of whole towns and ecosystems with that cheaper mountain top removal.
“W” did indeed produce a lot of legless warriors with his lies and wars, poorly handled in Afghanistan, and totally unwarranted in Iraq.
Another case of totally false comparisons from the right.
Is this what you were looking for?………“A record 94,031,000 Americans were not in the American labor force last month — 261,000 more than July — and the labor force participation rate stayed stuck at 62.6 percent, a 38-year low, for a third straight month in August, the Labor Department reported on Friday, as the nation heads into the Labor Day weekend.”
Industries come and go. It’s part of the cycle of life and accounting systems. Big steel left. The auto industry mostly left Detroit. Get over it.Wars are another matter since they are all political. We should be able to do something about those responsible.

Natural gas is cheaper than coal. A gas fired turbine requires so much less labor and upkeep. Cheap gas from fracking is killing coal. Strip is a lie.

A lot of those who are no longer looking for work are retiring boomers. Buggy whip manufactories feel coal’s pain.

Commenters, Commenters, don’t you get it? When a president declares war on whatever front, it is the rest of us that suffer for it.
So who wins? Just look at who is making all the money on the “wars”.
