Art critic, personality critic, it’s all the same skill.

Given that some folks can take little more that a colored pen, press it against a standard size canvas so a leaves a dot no bigger a period, call it art, and then sell it for five figures or more tells me Lucy’s wrong about what Linus doing not being art. And there are other things that folks get away with calling art. I could take and make a ham and Swiss, take a couple bites out of it, set it on a plate, then call it something stupid like “Man Visits Ego” and I can assure you that if I get the right museum and the right crowd I’d get away with calling it art and make big bucks off what should have been lunch. Doubt too many calling themselves artists got away with stuff like that back when this strip originally ran. Today some of what passes as art is just ridiculous.

Back when this strip originally ran, they already had Picasso and Dada-ism and “surrealism” and stuff like that. Nothing new under the sun. And that’s probably Schulz’ point.

I think Lucy just described a number of Kinkade paintings.

Usually critics just contribute by peeing on the art. Lucy demands changes.

It becomes art the minute you put it in a frame.

I don’t know art, but I know what I like. I’ve seen cars built in the thirties that to me, are as much art as a painting.

This was the last ever strip to include the rectangle “Peanuts by Schulz” block even though since 1966 it has used the “Peanuts Featuring Good ’Ol Charlie Brown by Schulz” thing in the first box.

Art is subjective. It is what you think it is. Lucy should take her ego and go jump in the lake.

Ruthie would know good art. “Drawed” while you wait. She could advise Linus.

Many years ago Jackson Pollack tripped and dumped 5 or 6 paint cans onto the canvas on the floor(I believe it went for $300,000 recently)..The colorist today got almost everything right,,,,except the red streaks …..in the sky

This is exactly what the art world has come to. Art is what the critics decide is art, not what the artist makes on his own or the potential customer likes. The critic (here portrayed by Lucy) decides what is and isn’t art, and what is and isn’t good. The artist must abide by that or not be exhibited and the customer must buy it or be totally regarded as having no taste. But the real test is how the world regards things 100 year after the fact. Van Gogh, who never sold a painting during his life is far more popular than many of his critically acclaimed contemporaries.
