Gotta admit, getting waited on hand and foot is great. Too bad you have to be sick or hurt to get it at the hospital. Besides, the food isn’t always all that great either. And it especially doesn’t taste very good when you’ve had surgery in the digestive area like an appendectomy or gall bladder removal. Probably because the pain makes you not feel much like eating.

I’ve forgotten quite a few of the Doonesbury reruns, but remember this one well.

A large problem here is that “boarding houses” have been regulated out of business. In the 60s in Ca, marginal people(alcoholics on SS, functioning disabled, etc) could get room and board for 60% or so of thier check. They got 2 meals a day and a warm place to sleep. The state made them retrofit handicap accessable doors, bathrooms and ramps. The cost was enough to put them out of business, many would never qualify because of their features. The regulations also required multiple people running the operation which raised the cost above what these fixed incomes could afford.

1985 was a more liberal time. Can’t imagine “guests” under current health care.
