This is just one helluva comic strip. Like Peanuts, I can’t start my day w/out reading it and this panel is as good a reason why as any. I spoke this way at my grandfather’s and father’s graves when they passed away and I found myself taking care of my grandmother and mother. I hope they think I kept my promise!
Don’t be in such a hurry to expect a ring! It’s only been a month or so since Val actually acknowledged that she and Phil were in a relationship!
It seems likely that that’s the direction they’re heading and will (eventually) reach, but let’s give Phil a chance to be a boyfriend for a while before he has to be a fiance. If/when he becomes a husband, the strip will undergo a fundamental shift; as things progress new doors will open, but others will irrevocably close.
@fritzoid, a month in real time is not necessarily the same amount of time in the comic strip itself. Comic strip time is elastic - it can be more or less than real time. Look at how sometimes it can take a whole week to show something that in real time might take 5 to 10 minutes!
I don’t want to bring anybody down, and I know comic strip time is flexible, but I for one am hoping there isn’t a proposal of marriage in the offing (yet).
For years this has been a “Single Mom with Sometime-Boyfriend” strip. It now appears to be a “Single Mom with Serious Boyfriend” strip, and that’s great. But there’s a lot of possibilities in that scenario that can be explored before we rush into a “Single Mom with Fiance” or “Married Couple with Two Kids from Previous Marriage” strip, and once that step is taken there’s no real going back.
I hope Jan takes her own sweet time in getting this couple to the altar.
Well, Val has always been more central than Joan, even when they shared a house.
(By the way, in the wikipedia entry for “Stone Soup”, it appears that “Stone” is Val’s maiden name - Joan returned to “Joan Stone” after her divorce, and their mother is “Evie Stone.” But Holly’s and Alix’s last names are given as “Stone” as well. Did Val Stone marry a man named Tom Stone? Did Tom take Val’s name when they married? Or did the parents each keep their birthnames, and the daughters were given their maternal surname?)
I love this strip. I’m a single mom and my former husband died when our girls were 10 and 15; this cartoon makes me choke up with strips like this. And it makes me laugh on other days. Keep up the great work!

I love Stone Soup for different reasons than I love Cul de Sac, but it’s just as wonderful!

That was sweet. (It must be love because Phil sure has a short memory of how the girls messed with him recently… :-))

Well, when you are looking at a pair of shoes you know you can’t fill, you start off with a new pair of shoes and see what you can do…

tcayer: it’s a cartoon. Time and reality are flexible. Phil can goof off as long as he wants and still finish his lunch break on time.
Phil, you rock.

Tcayer, ya gotta go back to when Phil first popped up. Those stone girls like police uniforms, (hot, hot, hot) and bike engines that go VROOOM!!!

fritzoid,
this particular ‘toon does not need a psychological break down - or a reality thwap.
the way the world is today it’s nice to see something positive.

This arc started on Memorial Day…yes I know, very looong day. The family wanted a man in uniform to make the visit extra special.

it’s making me cry, and not much does that
no promise to be perfect, which would be unrealistic.
