Helmets like that, commonly known as “pith helmets” or “sola topee” were worn by many westerners who had to spend much time outdoors in tropical climates. I have seen pictures of my own parents, both mother and father, wearing them. They served as Christian missionaries in China in the 1940s and in South Africa in the 1950s.

I have one, for the heat!
