Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson for May 12, 2015
Transcript:
Calvin: "How come grown-ups don't go out to play?" Dad: "Grown-ups can only justify playing outside by calling it exercise, doing it when they'd rather not, and keeping records to quantify their performance" Calvin: "That sounds like a job" Dad: "-Except you don't get paid" Calvin: "So play is worse than work?" Dad: "Being a grown-up is tough"

Dad’s telling the truth for once, but from Calvin’s point of view this is probably less believable than the usual rubbish he tells him.

Well, Calvin’s dad gives him somewhat different answers on different days. Here’s one where adulthood doesn’t sound so bad:Calvin and Hobbes (September 11, 1993)Peanuts (August 6, 1972)Mutts (August 12, 2011)Hobbes Premium Member almost 9 years ago
In today’s strip, Calvin’s Dad is practicing the lost art of writing on a pad of paper using a pen or pencil. He is a lawyer, but the shape of the pad looks like letter-size paper, not legal size. Perhaps he is practicing the lost art of writing a letter.Maybe he is using the lost art of cursive handwriting.Fortunately, Bill Watterson’s art has not been lost, and it is still available for us to enjoy each day — even if we no longer practice the lost art of reading a newspaper.

Of course, there’s the other side of the coin, as evidenced by Gahan Wilson’s “Nuts” comic strips.

@ Hobbes, the Peanuts website used to have free ecards to send to people. The “Security” strip was one of them, and had beautiful music with it. Thanks for bringing back the memory. (I wish they’d bring back the card.)

And that is why I have grandchildren. I have the perfect excuse to act like a 7-year-old.
Or as the saying goes: We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.

As for today’s comic, Calvin’s dad is absolutely spot on!
Of course, many of us never grew up, so it doesn’t apply…

I’m 20 so I’ve only been a ‘grown up’ for 2 years! (18 is the adult age in the UK)
I’m aware there are much worse things to come so no lectures please.

@leftwingpatriot: You carry a Parker Jotter pen with you? I should have thought of that. It sounds a lot easier than hauling around this inkwell.

@LeadingEdge: One evening I signed my name in cursive on a credit card receipt at the hardware store, and the salesman told me that mine was the first legible signature he had seen all day. Then he asked me how I had gotten the name “Hobbes.”

@LX013: How did I get the name Hobbes? Bill Watterson thought it up.

Would it still mean the same thing if you were 18?

Basically, being a kid stinks, due to lack of control over their own lives, and being an adult stinks, too, for a large number of reasons.

@N.E.G.Good line about reading the obituaries. I’ll have to use that one.
@WolfLove the “Growing old/up” quote. Thanks for sharing.

I see you went “PRO”! Good for you!
I am not sure I would want to be 20 again, especially with the knowledge and experience I have today.
I am quite certain I would never make 40 a second time around…
