Reminds me of a story by Fritz Leiber where a woman switched off the universe…

A man said to the universe: “Sir I exist!” “However,” replied the universe, “the fact has not created in me a sense of obligation.” – Stephen Crane

You’re right, “dim the lights”, but the word is “rheostat”

The light switch at the end of the Universe? Somehow appropriate.

Well, “On” hasn’t done us much good so far.

At the end of the universe, the lights will definitely go out, switch or no switch.

Unless it shuts off all of existence suddenly, not only will the switch cease to exist but there will be no one around to flip it back.

Reminds me of the old story about a dinosaur mainframe computer and the switch that was inexplicably mounted to the frame with just one wire on it that went nowhere. The switch was labeled MAGIC and MORE MAGIC; it was set to the MORE MAGIC position. Not seeing any reason for the switch, an engineer flipped it to MAGIC — and shut the computer down. He immediately flipped it back to MORE MAGIC and the computer started up again. When they upgraded their systems and decommissioned the old dinosaur mainframe, the engineer took the switch and tossed it into his desk drawer. Just to be safe, he kept it in the MORE MAGIC position.

“Some humans would do anything to see if it was possible to do it. If you put a large switch in some cave somewhere, with a sign on it saying ‘End-of-the-World Switch. PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH’, the paint wouldn’t even have time to dry.”

― Terry Pratchett, Thief of Time
