Transcript:
Gramma Evie: Val, I'm guessing you can't commit to Phil because you lost TOM. Gramma Evie: But, honey, Tom died years ago. Val: I know that! I remember EXACTLY when he died. Gramma Evie: It's time to FORGET when he died. Remember when he LIVED... Gramma Evie: And move on!

Good advice Mom!
Lyons Group, Inc. about 14 years ago
Good advice indeed. Remember what it is said about our loved ones and the famous: “You don’t remember them for how they died, but for how they lived!”.
groucho1 about 14 years ago
Brian Crook- how about cleaning up your language? Not everyone lives in the gutter.
How about love ,MARRIAGE ,then Sex? Radical Huh?
sarge112751 about 14 years ago
Well said groucho - WELL said!
[and considering the source of my comment, thats GOING some!]
Colt9033 about 14 years ago
Well, Tom sure would be saying same thing if he could tell her from beyond.

My thought too, Paul Jones. I was wondering why this is a revelation now. But, better late than never. Who knows maybe this will lead to some big news!
BrianCrook about 14 years ago
Groucho, that WAS clean!
Val & Phil already have love. She said that days ago. Marriage before sex? Why?
celeconecca about 14 years ago
Good advice from grandma. But only Val can tell when the mourning can be packed away.
pearlandpeach about 14 years ago
the line was not clean, BrianCrook. out of the gutter time.
vldazzle about 14 years ago
Sex should be glorified only as an expression of true love - NOT the way it was expressed in the first comment!!
Smiley Rmom about 14 years ago
Marriage before sex is important, because the commitment makes each person & the relationship more valuable, and therefore, more enjoyable.
kab2rb about 14 years ago
I hope no children are ready some of these strips. Not all women who loose their husband either by divorce or death start dating again.
No one get mad at me I think it will be up to Val what she wants to do. I know personally of a few examples but would take to long to write it would be based on this strip but to personnel and who wants a diary.
jperes moderator about 14 years ago
Crook, that comment is inappropriate for this strip, which is intended for a family audience. Use better judgement. You know, like a grown-up.
BrianCrook about 14 years ago
Friends, I don’t want to get into a p*ssing contest about this. If my comment offended you, then please accept my apologies. Each day, I read comments that offend me. It the nature of 21st-century InternetAmerica. I find it offensive that someone would advise others to wait until marriage before having sex or would term talk about sex as being “in the gutter”, but no matter. Let’ let it all roll off our backs. We enjoy the strip, and we enjoy the give-&-take, the back-&-forth. Differing opinions are what make horse races. Sex is a blessing. Love is a blessing. A good marriage is a blessing. Let us leave it there.
We can agree that Val needs to show Phil a little mo’ time & attention, even if we can’t agree on precisely the means, right?
Off to run errands then write. No paying work until dusk. Good day, all!
Mythreesons about 14 years ago
Gee, Brian, what did you say? A posting 28 minutes ago said it was inappropriate and it disappeared in that length of time.
Mythreesons about 14 years ago
Couldn’t resist adding a personal note: Both my first and second husband (20 1/2 years each) died a few months apart in 2009. First Hubby’s widow already paired off with new guy! My boys thrilled they only have to worry about own mom, step mom they hardly knew no longer their worry.
kab2rb about 14 years ago
Mythreesons Briancooks comments at the start did disappear. It wasn’t very appropriate for go comics. I guess it got censored or he took it off.
This is suppose to be family friendly and some comments I wouldn’t want children to read. Though children are suppose to be in school but some schools are on spring break.

I wonder if Stone Soup is coming to an end. Holly’s moved out of Gramma’s bedroom, Gramma’s giving everyone life-changing advice and everyone’s moving on. I hope I’m not right, cause I love the comic but this is how artists typically end their strips…
POPPA1956 about 14 years ago
Good advice from Gramma, but often easier said then done.
RinaFarina about 14 years ago
Oh, Gramma, you is wonderful!!
RinaFarina about 14 years ago
No one is ever going to convince me that men (aside from members of radical fundamentalist religions) omit sexual relations until they marry.
jerzy about 14 years ago
Val shows NO other evidence of still being in mourning, so why is that being blamed? Seems FAR more likely that Phil is just not the guy for her. I haven’t seen any evidence so far of them having any great romance, or even of him being more than just a friend who shows up now & then. Seems to me if she were really in love with him, she wouldn’t need to be talked into it.
BrianCrook about 14 years ago
For information purposes only, I will simply mention that my censored remark of this morning chimed in with Evie’s advice, pointing out that Val’s intimate life has been absent for lo these many years, and speculating about the wear & tear of any electric devices that women use for their own pleasure.
I agree with those who would hate to see this strip end. It seems that there are many rewarding paths left: the girls’ growing up, Evie’s love life, Joan’s practically chaotic life next door (perhaps an illness could strike Wally—we could see health-care reform at work?), &c. Nevertheless, I WOULD LOVE to see Val’s libido revived. She deserves some good stuff.
Ushindi about 14 years ago
Personally, I sort of agree with vldazzle. Although I don’t “glorify” sex, I do truly love it…
i_am_the_jam about 14 years ago
Odd, in the early strips, Grandma blamed Val for Tom’s death. Namely, he died “because she was away at some protest”.
vldazzle about 14 years ago
Ushindi, it can be when you are truly in love ;-) but many of us were truly offended by Brian’s crude language and someone (not I) must have flagged it, and the moderator must have agreed. I was once married and later was truly in love ;-)

I’m in favor of marriage and commitment and true love and all, but if you enforce “No Sex Without Marriage” then you’ve (a) got people marrying too young, and/or (b) forbidden people (men, in particular) from having sex at the very time their bodies are most craving it and best capable of it.
And of course, in this country there are laws PROHIBITING some people from marrying the person they’re in love with.
Sex isn’t the be-all and end-all of marriage, but it’s IMPORTANT, and some people who wait until after the wedding discover that they’re coupled “til death do they part” with someone who is simply sexually incompatible with them.

Looks like I missed some action! GOOD GOLLY MISS MOLLY! THIS IS A COMIC STRIP FOR HEAVEN SAKE! Why do some people have to turn my favorite strips into a WILD DEBATE, S E X TALK, POLITICS, “LET’S PICK ON THIS PERSON BECAUSE THEY HAVE A DIFFERENT OPINION’ , AND ON AND ON WE GO! Not just here but other strips too! KEEP IT UP PEOPLE and gocomics WILL SHUT DOWN THE WORKS! GEEZ!

‘Time to move on’ sounds good, but what Eve should be analyzing is ‘is this the situation Val should be moving on INTO?’ New relationships rearrange your thoughts, habits, and life, including how other people’s lives touch yours.

Val needs to build a bridge and get over it!!
