The Bush Admin. thought they could invade Iraq and ? To this day we’re still not sure what the real goal was. There have disturbing accounts of Admin. officials being surprised that the Sunni/Shea split existed. ’It just goes to show that there’s a reason why the Iraq debacle is considered one of the largest policy mistakes in history.
People forget their basic government studies. Democracy is a byproduct of enlightenment. You have to have enlightened leadership, which is willing to give up it’s power and allow citizen to elect new leaders and set mandates. And citizens have to be enlightened enough to accept a legally elected leadership, and use their power of the vote to right a perceived wrong. Iraq has neither of these traits. The country has very little tolerance, and you can’t force that trait onto anybody.
You beat me to it. Myths are not just ancient comic book stories — they have religious and historical significance. Conf. THE GREEK MYTHS, also by Robert Graves.
American “Christians” becoming too complacent and self-righteous should note Mikey Weinstein’s Military Religious Freedom Foundation: intolerance doesn’t come just from the Middle East, or Islam. (MIkey’s Jewish btw, not “atheist” as often claimed by fundamentalist “Christians” who want to dominate here.)
Myanmar is systematically persecuting that country’s Muslims. The point is not their military government, the point is that religious intolerance in found many countries.

Actually this isn’t an Iraq problem, it’s most of the Middle East’s Islamic fascism at work.

“Intolerance” is such a mild word for genocide in the name of religion.

Iraq could have been another Turkey if we had adequately supported its fledgling democracy.
