If he really wants to propose, give her really nice Valentine’s gifts without proposing – so she’ll be happy with his attention. Then, the next day, propose.

    @Brockie

I resemble that! Roses are a cliche’ (I prefer daisies) and Valentines was made up by the card companies, chocolate companies and/or flower companies. It is just another day like any other. Joe, proposing on Valentines Day would be a mistake (although why you need to propose at all if there is an understanding is beyond me). Also don’t assume she likes diamonds, not all of us do you know (I think they are one of the least attractive ‘rocks’ out there). Not to mention, that since you don’t have a lot of money, maybe you should just skip the whole ring and save it for a great vacation. Jewelery is overrated, traveling is great! If you’re really lucky you can skip the whole wedding nonsense too. Why in the world anyone would spend all that money on cake, flowers and dresses is beyond me. Put it towards a better house or something else for goodness sake. Just a few friends and family at a nice steak house after a trip to the court house is all I want.

Okay, I’m done ranting folks. I like Victoria, she’s keeper Joe!

I went to the florist, jewelry store, chocolate store, card store, and lobster shack..

    She’ll say:

You bring me flowers every week. Why waste money on the most expensive day for roses?

The diamond necklace is beautiful. Is there a ring?

Chocolate makes my butt big. Can you unwrap these?

You were an Engish major. You can’t write your own card?

Do you know the mess this lobster is going to make of my kitchen?

Then she’ll say something and the lights will dim.

@vexatron I do like yellow roses, but don’t need them. I don’t like diamonds. Our wedding bands have black opal bands in them; disn’t have an engagement ring. We got married with just 10 people around after church one day, then went to a steakhouse. I agree with you. I tried it big and fancy the first time, it didn’t last. This time is not perfect, but it’s so much better because our priorities are different.

@wndwrthg said, “They never are. No matter what you do, it is wrong.”

Is that ever true. There’s an old joke that goes, “If a man is alone in the woods, with no women around for hundreds of miles, and says something, is he still wrong?”

I’ve yet to meet a woman who doesn’t say “yes” to that one. Men are, to all women, always wrong. We can’t do anything right in their eyes. And then they wonder why we’d sooner hang out with our buddies than with them.

@ Guys commenting here: you need to find a better class of woman. They’re out there but your anti-rose-tinted glasses (topical pun intended) might be impeding your ability to see her when you come face to face with her. Yeah some women fit that stereotype but, ahem, you’re fitting one, too, right now. How about we all agree to be individuals instead of stereotypes? ;)

Wow, all the guys here see her as picky and snippy and inconsiderate. Isn’t it kind of picky and snippy and inconsiderate to think that about another human being? I mean, do they all have to share YOUR view, or is it just the women in your life? Father of two women asks. Incidentally, they’re always right, right or wrong, so you can get it right by being gracefully wrong. or growing up and having a conversation about it. Women are definitely the Kobiashi Mauru (Or however the Trekist spells it) of existence. But i know, WE don’t believe in those situations. And flunk the test.

Some guys use the idea that Valentine’s Day was a creation of card companies as an excuse for not doing anything for their main squeeze then or ever. Who says you have to buy a card? Why not make one? The point is, if it means something to your sweetheart, why not do it for her? Isn’t that what it means to love someone? Love her the way she needs to be loved, go out of your way a little to make her feel like the most important person in the world to you. It doesn’t have to cost you an arm and a leg, just a little thoughtfulness and kindness. If you think she doesn’t need to hear it, I guarantee you’re mistaken. We all need it.

I agree with the one who posted that written messages of love and appreciation are often prized and saved for years, especially when they are few and far between. Whether they come from a parent, child, spouse, sibling, or friend, a few well-written words can be an encouragement for a lifetime, and a legacy that even lasts long after you have departed this life. My father wrote very few letters, but I have every one he ever wrote to me. I treasure them. Same goes for cards written by my husband.

You really should Google the origins of Valentine’s Day. Card Companies had nothing to do with it. Of course, they capitalized on it, but they did not start it.

See the Loose Parts comic for today that references the origins of Valentine’s Day.

When I say the holiday was made up by card companies I mean that all this “romantic” nonsense was started by them, or rather someone during the nineteenth-century decided to romanticize it and modern companies have gone to extremes with it, like they do every holiday. Valentines Day had nothing to romance when it was first recognized.

Well, since Danae and Victoria have an agreement, I believe Joe is outnumbered. But, as for skipping the question, these things have to be asked and answered, if only so the agreement is really agreed by both.

And, as business-like and pushy as Victoria may be, perhaps that’s what Joe wants or needs. Who knows? Maybe love will temper Victoria’s hard points. Or, maybe the fireworks will keep us entertained anyway.

    Go for it, Joe!

Man, some of us are really taking Victoria too seriously. I don’t think we need to worry about Joe. He’s been married before, he knows what mistakes to avoid, and Victoria’s a woman that’s clearly honest and has a clear vision of what she wants.

It’s Jeffrey, or whoever Danae ultimately ends up with, that we need to worry about. I doubt anyone on Earth is ready to deal with that!
