To be honest, I agree with Holly. No TV all day all summer is unreasonable. I don’t think Val should insist on extremes like that. A favorite show or two a day for each of them should totally be in the book.

I say go outside and play. t.v. really does get boring after awhile. Save it for those high heat index days.

No tv all summer when I was a kid…course it hadn’t been invented yet! We didn’t have a tv when our kids were little. We finally got a little black and white one when they were about Alix’s age. But I surely reared up a couple of enthusiastic readers.

Most daytime TV isn’t fit for young ’uns anyway.

Seriously, I often wonder if we’re in the mess we’re in is because kids grow up watching Jerry Springer or the soap operas and think that’s normal.

When I was a kid I listened to the radio all summer – “The Breakfast Club” with Don McNeill, “True Story,” “Glamour Manor,” “The Farm and Home Hour” (I called it “The Harm and Foam Hour”), “Our Gal Sunday,” “Queen for a Day,” etc. Then there were the late-afternoon kids’ shows: “Jack Armstrong, the All-American Boy,” “Superman,” “Terry and the Pirates,” and on Saturdays, “Let’s Pretend.” During radio time, I’d lie on the floor and doodle. Of course, there was outdoor play with my friends, getting shards of ice off the iceman’s truck, reading magazines . . . Mom wouldn’t let me get comic books, so I had to sneak them at friends’ houses. Anyone remember those programs?

Just for a split second I imagined Alix doing that as an adult. It brought a smile.

Alix summer time watching TV she moved on to having fun. Most programs are reruns anyway. When my two were children I took them to library for summer reading time. Also paid for my daughter swim lessons. We did not have cable so summer time in a small town was very boring to both of them. They also got to ride bikes. We go to a small town park.

Only three channels and all soap operas during the day when I was a kid, and what kid wants to watch those? Except for Dark Shadows…
