This is so true… I have a lovely walk down memory lane every time I fish out the decorations and put them up. I still use the paper garlands my parents bought when they were first married (although the garlands are very tatty now seeing as they’re sixty-odd years old). And some memories make me happy (“Remember when we bought this?”) and others sad (Mum no longer has much of a hold on reality).
Those are our sentiments exactly. People in the past have asked us what our Christmas tree theme is and would always says a walk down memory lane. Pulling out the ornaments always makes us stop to remember.
Our kids are now 33 and 29 and we now have two granddaughters, three years old and a six weeks old and have started building new memories. Our ornaments are our renewal each year of where we were when.
Lynn, you just made my Christmas Spirit soar! The merchandise cascade on Christmas morning is fleeting and a signal that Christmas is over. That’s not teamwork, it’s just cash or credit. My kids are 40, 38 and 30 now and we should do a Johnston Moment well before Christmas day… like I just read this morning.
I remember looking through the ornament collection my mom had when we were kids. That was almost as much fun as decorating the tree. Some of those ornaments are now in my collection mom gave me several years ago. Love it!
This year our girls (9 & 13) took over decorating, and we had a blast watching them. “No, no. This one goes here, remember?” “and that one needs to be more to the left”. It was so fun watching them work together and recall the memories themselves.
Our Christmas tree is also a walk down memory lane. Everything from Mike’s “strawberries” made from walnuts in Kindergarten to the mementos from our Alaska vacation.
A good heartfelt strip today. My tree is all toy ornaments. I can remember where & when I got most of them. Some are over 30 yrs old. It takes me about 2-3 days to complete the tree for all the reminiscing.

Momentary peace. In about five minutes, they’ll learn that Lizzie ate one of the holly berries and needs her stomach pumped.

I feel the exact same way with every ornament I put on our tree.

I’ll get depressed if I try to do that, so I won’t…. Much.

My father took 8 MM movies when my kids were little, and I have converted them to DVD! What great memories they bring back.
