just wondering – am I the only one for whom this strip is not displaying when there’s a new one? I realized yesterday that I had not seen it for some time, so I scrolled back to the "e"s and caught up on about 5 strips.

Well, it’s up when I brought it up on this Nook Color (7:18 am Eastern). Can’t complain…today.

It’s good here, at 7:27am EST. Also, I guess they’re going to try using the cart as a shell and the grenade as a bunch of gunpowder. Next stop… out the barrel.

I think it was just posted late. It wasn’t in my queue at first, but now it’s there.

I forget, what’s holding the elevator up?

This is fun! You could easily count on a funny cartoon animal’s 3 fingered hand the number of times I’ve been right about what’s coming next in this strip, but I did call this one! Maybe I get it right again in another couple of years…. ;-)

Interesting that they called it a “lux” class. I would have gone with Magnum, High Potency or something performance based.

Given the lack of cabling or any kind of rack and gear arrangement I’d have to go with a differential of pressure arrangement. Suction (lower than atmospheric pressure) above the pod would be pulling the tube up. Then the lower part of the shaft would be sealed off and the air pressure below the pod would be added for a differential. By the time the pod reached the top of the tube, air pressure below the pod would be the only thing driving it up.The one thing that bugs me is that, since the top of the surface is covered with dust, the tube can’t go all the way to the top. Part of the pod would need to remain in the tube for the elevator to function. That suggests that the pod would have to extend below the floor, which is something that has yet to be shown. Aren’t engineers a pain?

Now Endtown might just think they died in an elevator accident. The Rabbit using the death of Holly to further his power play by again blaming the rats.

If that’s the only elevator, they’re sealing EndTown off to its own fate. Oops…

There are several transport tubes. This is a multi-person tube. Single-person tubes were shown when everyone went on the rocket mission. There are probably heavy lifter tubes as well. When the capsule goes back down, the sandcrawlers probably smooth over the hatch. That might be difficult in this case if the capsule blows through the hatch. Maybe Wally can use a panel from the capsule to cover the hole.

If the elevators are actually pneumatic and not hydraulic, busting a hole in the doors will cause the elevator to drop at a speed directly proportional to the rate at which the air can escape. If the elevators are really hydraulic, then the only way the elevator will move at all is if the grenade penetrates the tube walls and punctures one of the pipes, allowing the fluid to escape and the elevator to drop (again, the rate will depend on how bad the break is).I don’t believe that the elevator will be propelled to the surface under any circumstances. The physics involved just won’t allow it. And I also believe our esteemed author would already know this.

I always had the impression that the elevators pushed up through the ground above them, or at least the top layer of it…I had that impression but I can’t vouch for the how of it.

While we’re waiting, thought I’d just mention how far the grenade will fall before blowing up. Assuming that Wally let go right after pulling the pin, and that gravity works the same as for us, after 6 seconds the grenade will travel 580 feet (0.11 miles), and be going 131 miles an hour. At 7 seconds, it’s 787 feet (0.15 miles) at 153 mph (terminal velocity should be close to 200 mph so the grenade will still be accelerating). If it hits the bottom of the shaft, it will blow the doors out, so hopefully the pod is more than 800 feet up right now…

If I wait until I get my GoComics email, End Town will be up. If I come here earlier, it won’t be up. This morning it was 2 hours and 40 minutes after the others were up before I got the email.
