    Q. How many university student-athletes does it take to change a light bulb?

    A. One, and he gets 3 semester hours credit just for doing it.

In the UK the Sports Field is usually sold off for building development.

Compared to college football, the federal government is a paragon of integrity.

I recommend watching the Marx Brothers movie “Horsefeathers” to keep this in perspective. This 80 year old movie was made in the leather helmet era but the cheating and corruption was the same albeit on a much lesser scale because there was far less money involved. Groucho: “do we have a college? Do we have a football team? Well we can’t afford both, Monday morning we start tearing down the college.”

Why without college football teams how do you justify the outrageous tuitions? Advertise for fresh meat . . . er, Freshman that is. Convince them to take out tens of thousands of dollars of student loans to get a BA leaving them qualified to do nothing productive in particular, spending the rest of their life paying on it, and then 10 years later not have the alma mater pester you for donations?

Knowing you guys there’s a rational system in place.

“He should have read the contract.”#He can’t read! But that is just one of his many social issues. When asked to sign a contract, he put a scrawly X.

As a former teacher, I find this cartoon more sad than amusing. At my university, the only coach who seemed to care about his athletes was the women’s basketball coach. The football coach sure didn’t care. And in the greatest display of irony, the women’s basketball team was the most successful athletic entity on campus, with the best win record and almost as many fans as the football team.

While this appears to be a fairly accurate picture of college football, there are exceptions. Several years back, the Chicago Bears had a lineman with an MBA. He was known to have helped several teammates with their finances so that they would still be in good shape when they were done playing in the NFL. Clearly, he actually studied in college.

For a long time, I’ve been amused that it’s “student athletes” rather than the more grammatically correct “athlete students”. In English, which usually comes first, the noun or the adjective?

Since athlete and student are both nouns, largely irrelevant. “Athletic students” would be correct but confusing. So we call them student athletes to pretend the studies are more important.

Remember the week after 9/11 when the nation briefly came to its senses and all sports events were canceled. and yet the world didn’t end? I get my self-esteem from things I do, not what some ball-chaser does.
