Phil: Well, I'm four years older than you...he was an upperclassman...
Phil: He's probably only 12 or 13 years younger than your mom.
Phil: Go EVIE.
Val: Stop that!!

Can you say Cougar?

Only 12 ~ 13 years younger? Well, unless Evie is only 40 it passes the “squick” test (his age > (her age/2 +7)).

You know, as we grow up, we spend so much energy wishing that our parents would finally see us as the adults we are. Never occurs to us to reciprocate…

If the situation was reversed no one would bat an eye. Where is it written the man should be older or that men can date someone half their age but women can’t?

I think it just a case of ‘Evie’ being ‘Mom’ and not just a ‘faceless’ nobody. We all find it hard to think of our parents actually being ‘romantically’ involved–we think ‘it’ just happens–can’t picture parents ‘kissing’ and other ‘stuff’. But I agree–GO EVIE!!!

It’s in the Koran! The Islamic ideal age of a woman is half the man’s age, plus 8! If the man is 20, the woman should be 18. If the man is 30, the woman should be 23. If the man is 50, the woman should be 33! Of course, if the marriage lasts that age ratio changes, but that’s why you get a second wife later on, and a third later still…
(Well, it IS a traditional formula, but I don’t think it’s actually in the Koran.)

This is a comic strip but can hapen in real life. I can well imagine Val shock about her mother. Val has to realize mom has a life of her own. Mom will not be in Thialand forever and waite untill she gets home.

I go by the “double-digit rule”: you should never date anyone where the difference in your ages is double digits. BUT … the exception to that rule is if you’re over 55, you’ve earned the right to date whomever, regardless of the age gap. So I’m guessing Evie’s in the clear.
Besides, has anyone considered that Arnold might be 68 and just uses Grecian or Just for Men?

rayannina, that’s the possibility that’s being removed in this sequence of strips. Phil knew the guy in High School.

fbjsr said “if it were a 63 year old man going out with a 50 year old woman, nobody would care” THEIR KIDS WOULD. That’s the real issue here.

When I was 60 I dated a fellow who was 43. We had so much in common it would have been silly to look at the age gap. He found someone else eventually, but we had fun while it lasted. My kids never knew, as it happens. But my kids would just have had to deal. I’ve had to get used to a son-in-law 10 years older than my daughter. If I can, they can. Go Edie!

I dated a man 9 years younger than me. Never mind how old I am. Age is how you feel, not how many years you’ve lived.

Hey, if they have a lot in common - Habitat and other interests - (especially as they are old enough to know their minds) no one should care. On the other hand, one’s kids can always be freaky…about a parent’s “love life”;-)

That’s not true. Wally said Arnold was 60. Evie is 19 years older than Val, who is 39. That makes Evie 58.
