Even with the best intentions, actually telling a woman of any age that they are “less” in any supposedly desirable aspect is asking for trouble.

I hate when Luann over-analyzes everything that happen in a conversation with a guy. Though I do think it’s funny how Nancy acts all therapist-y when Luann gets that way.

Luann is still in that shallow stage where beauty equals physical appearance – similar to the teen guys. Quill moved beyond that, so he is beyond his years. She doesn’t understand the inner beauty yet. She doesn’t think inner beauty counts for anything because most teen boys don’t. She will not appreciate Quill at all – her big loss. Quill will tire of Luann and move on to another girl.

Luann doesn’t see the fakeness of Tiffany and Quill does. He’s just more mature. The sad thing is women, many of them, feel exactly this way about themselves even when they are genuinely beautiful.

I’m going to defend Luann here. Yes, this constant lack of self esteem and self awareness gets old, but this strip is a good reflection of modern times. I’m in my 50’s and had the good fortune to come of age during the feminist movement where there was a strong message of moving beyond how you look to who you are, using your brains instead of your looks, etc. Now it seems everything for girls is back to how you look, how much you get noticed, being a celebrity for everything BUT your intelligence and efforts. Let’s fact it, young girls have been Kardashianed. When we have baby beauty pageant contestants dressing up like hookers in movies, push-up swimsuit tops marketed to 10 year olds, and mommies getting little girls waxed and giving them gift certificates for liposuction (I’m not kidding), well, I think we know where Luann’s attitude come from.

What you guys aren’t seeing is that Luann is just as self-absorbed as Tiffany. Tiffany sees herself as perfect, Luann as imprefect. They are both the same self-absorbed teenage girl. Sure, Luann may volunteer and help others but other than that all she thinks about is herself.

Abercrombie… once upon a time, it was a rather sophisticated store, marketing things that added a touch of sophistication and even a little elegance to outdoor activities. Or would provide fine clothing and accessories. A little pricey, but valuable.

Then it got taken over by some sixty-plus man who acted like he was still seventeen. Since then, Abercrombie and Fitch has just fallen to the pavement. It would have been better if they had just gone out of business altogether.

Great to have y’all back after vacation! (Congratulations, Bike n Boat— glad you shared the glory yesterday). I tihnk the writer here is giving a lesson to the teenage girls who read the strip. And I’m not sure Luann is qualified to point fingers— her mom has black hair, her dad has “skin-colored” hair, so where does HER blonde hair come from?

Who’d look twice at Stefani Germanotta…but when she shows up as Lady Gaga…WOW. Don’t you think about a million guys would have loved to trade places with Mayor Bloomberg when she kissed him on New Year’s Eve? As Joseph Conrad said, “…youth is the romance of illusions.”

A Playboy bunny club manager was interviewing prospective bunnies. He rejected the first for having silicone enhanced breasts. The second he rejected for wearing a wig. And the third he rejected for wearing padding on her hips. His assistant said, “Gee, boss. You just turned down Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cottontail!”

Not much to add since the comments above pretty much cover all the bases. Luann’s sweet but she’s going to get hurt a few times before her mind matures. Even a clue-by-four wouldn’t do much for her at this stage.

I notice in passing that the trolls are out in force today; sometimes they’re more amusing than the strip itself.

A lot of good comments. I think mom should have phrased it differently…something like “a lot of guys see more than the paint job on a house or car”. The real value of a house, car, person, etc. is behind the shiny facade, or in other cases, the less than shiny facade.

Kind of a boring week with perpetually clueless characters. No mention at all of inner beauty, which is what’s behind the entire Tiff-Luann-Quill drama. It’s as though nobody can articulate this concept (not even Mom), and so the whole conversation is fixated on surface beauty, with no way to get to the root of what’s going on. TGIF.

This is typical teenage girl stuff. I remember going through something like this at that age.

However, let me point out again: “Luann, remember that you beat Tiffany in a beauty contest. Let me add, please, that, if you watch TV Land, you should be aware that, although many men want to have a relationship with the glamorous Ginger, the ones who want a serious relationship, wanted to get to know MaryAnn. Finally, understand that, though Tiffany’s looks are perfect, most guys aren’t looking for that. Guys like all natural good looks and, babe, you got that all over.”

Luann is also high maintenance too, I mean she kind of proved that when she got hung up on thinking Quill was into Tiff when he never ever acted into her and even when he told her nothing happened (even if it had she’s not his girlfriend) she proceeded to whine jealously about it all day at school. Just because she’s the main character doesn’t mean she’s perfect.

Most people seem to be missing the elephant in the room! Yes, Luann is insecure and can’t quite believe Quill likes her, not Tiff…but there has been a major change this week. At least for now, she’s gone from doubting Quill could still be interested in her to acknowledging he thinks she’s beautiful—even if she can’t quite understand how that could be possible. Perhaps the point of this week??

@…said, just like the “real housewives” (especially Bev Hills, who are all indistinguishable Barbies). The aren’t even interesting to watch since they are hard to distinguish one from another. They have all had so much “work done”. There was a girl in my grade school of whom I was jealous because she was perfectly coifed and had lovely new stylish clothes (while I washed and set my own hair and still do, and my parents bought my clothes in resale). I have seen her a while back at 50th HS and I’m no longer the least bit jealous.

@janinbarnes, I also dressed oddly in school because of what I could find in good condition in the resale shops (as I was given some choice) and the other kids called me “teach” because my clothing was mor similar to what our teachers wore than what was in fashion for teens. Currently Baldeagle and Ottodesu have always had the clearest fix on the personalities (and our resident sheriff/colorist).
