Well brush them off Nil.

This seems to provide some fodder for some of the more “imaginative” comments from yesterday that maybe Nil has some interest in Jack . . . maybe.

Has Nil dazzled Bernice with logic or …?

At least one day too many on this arc. Is there a point to all this?

So I really have no idea what point Nil is trying to make here.

In classical logic, a hypothetical syllogism is a valid argument form, a syllogism with a conditional statement for one or both of its premises.

An example in English:

If I do not wake up, then I cannot go to work.

If I cannot go to work, then I will not get paid.

Therefore, if I do not wake up, then I will not get paid.

In this case, we have:

If Da Vinci painted, then it was not a nude.

If Michelangelo painted, then it was probably a nude.

This one is not working for me. It has nude and painting in common, but I am not getting the syllogism. Besides all that, “David” was a sculpture and not a painting.

Nil your logic falls flat.

Is this till going on? And why didn’t Bernice raise her objections before putting on that Mono Lisa Rig? Of course if Nil had explained the “joke” before hand there wouldn’t be all this childish bantering. Sometimes I think Greg treats her readers like slow 13 year old.

Sardonic = grimly mocking or cynical

Hypothetical = based on a supposition or proposed explanation made on the basis of limited evidence as a starting point for further investigation

Syllogism = an instance or form of reasoning in which a conclusion is drawn (whether or not validly) from two given or assumed propositions (premises), each of which shares a term with the conclusion, and shares a common or middle term not present in the conclusion (e.g., all dogs are animals; all animals have four legs; therefore all dogs have four legs).

So it would appear that Nils doesn’t really appreciate daVinci’s Mona Lisa, and wishes to deprecate it by mockery. His reasoning is to infer that its model was staring at another model of the sort favored by a different artist of the same period. Hence Nils invokes crude sexual innuendo. His logic cannot really proceed to investigate his hypothesis to validate it, hence his artistic statement must be targeted at the sensibilities of potential modern viewers. Is it worth the embarrassed giggle it may invoke? Is this story arc worth the embarrassment it depicts? Has it added anything new to the readers’ appreciation of its characters? I wouldn’t think so.

How is it that Jacks robe is on in panel one, and off in panel 3?

But will Nil’s painting satisfy the critics?

You have to love Nil also for his ability to say intelligent things that silence Bernice and leave her confused. But I’m sure Nil loves her too exactly because she has no problem telling him his art projects look silly to her. For me their relationship is really perfect and I hope they’ll get back together as a couple too. Maybe Jack will help them with that someway.

I’m curious as to what Nil’s “art” would look like if he were influenced by Max Ernst, Picasso or Salvador Dali.

Betcha not only does Nil get an A+ on this piece but that he becomes a campus hero.

He would, at least, in a four-year school that loves to mock the establishment. Community college, maybe not.

So, am I the only one (haven’t been following comments) who think this might be a ruse on Nil’s part to get a look at Jack?

Obviously, Nil never saw daVinci’s Vitruvian Man.

Why did he disrobe between panels 1 & 3?

Da Vinci painted at least one female nude I can think of off the top of my head Leda and the Swan and he sure drew (OK not painted) a lot of male ones for his, err, anatomy studies…

Nils work has never focused on visual realism. Of course that doesn’t mean he can’t do it. Picasso had a great talent for visual realism (I’m saying that in a way I think readers may understand. In reality all art is abstract, even photography. But people tend to call work they can immediately visualize “realism” without realizing the abstract elements.). However Picasso thought, “He*l, if this is what somebody wants, let ’em buy a camera. I want to show more than that.”

I am so loving this!!

And he doesn’t have a beard that the crumbs are catching on – in – whatever.

You don’t have to put them in the painting, Nil.

So David is well known as a work of art with a disproportionately small “Schwanzstucker” (as opposed to the one in Young Frankenstein). What does this say about Jack?

A sardonic hypothetical syllogism? That doesn’t make sense even for an artist. If the premises are sardonically hypothetical, then the conclusion is soberly pragmatic nonsense.

So, your vision will have Mona’s head on Jack’s body. Or, Mona in the background ogling Jack’s body in the foreground. Interesting.

Commenters today have been pointing out that Nil’s claim that Da Vinci never painted a nude is incorrect. True enough, but as we have seen previously, Nil just resorts to blither when discussing art. That’s good enough for an “A” in Zebu’s class.

Speaking the proper language to each assistant. Perhaps Bern will be able to get more into the part based on this.
