Why anyone would go with the mind reading interpretations of the one translating the groundhog’s thoughts, which in my part of the world is only accurate less than 40% of the time, instead of the more accurate weather prediction method of flipping a coin, is beyond me.

R.I.P. Milltown Mel, Punxsutawney Phil’s New Jersey counterpart, who died on the eve of his big day … I wonder what that says about the coming weather … Half-and-half? A new season to be fit between winter and spring?

Once while ice fishing, a muskrat came up in the hole, for a breath. Scared something out of me, wasn’t my shadow either!

See you in 6 weeks! Maybe I’ll follow the Red Sox equipment truck down to Fort Meyers for spring training. IFF the lockout ends…

That’s not a ground hog. It’s a tail-less beaver. Very uncommon. I think it’s a sign of good luck. Now put it back before it kills you Earl.

Punxsutawney may have seen his shadow, portending 6 more weeks of winter, but Chester, the local groundhog in Newport News, VA (as in Chesapeake) came out into fog and overcast skies, i.e. no shadow. We may have had two snowfalls, but a warm-up is in the forecast.

Look at a calendar, no need for a buck toothed rodent to tell us the equinox is exactly 6 weeks from today. When my dad, an MS meteorologist, turned PhD physical oceanographer, told me that when I was 10 years-old, I was quite indignant! Almost as bad as finding out Santa, the Easter Bunny, and Tooth Fairy are fictional characters.

Miltown Mel local celebrity from NJ "crossed over the rainbow bridge just days before he was to make his prediction. He had performed this duty seven times which is a rather long time for a groundhog.
