And the fire department is called just as MANY predicted. And Irma even managed to do a bit of “male bashing” to boot. How 21st Century.

    Some points.

    1) To everyone and I mean Everyone who thought Gunther and Al deserted Les and the kitten, went to have dinner and weren’t going to help? WRONG!!! The line for the apologies forms to the left. ;)

    2) If this arc continues into next week, (and it might not) it’ll no doubt be Brad or Toni or both on that fire truck. Let’s hope neither of them (or anybody) gets hurt rescuing anyone, this time around.

    3) If Al had 2 by 4s and nails, why didn’t he Just nail some boards together and build a ramp so Punk could climb down off the roof as a certain person here suggested this week?

    4) The pillows Gunther is talking about is for the CAT you people! Even so, many of You were swearing up and down all week that Les could survive an 8 foot drop, so I don’t know what the “problem” is. Gunther was thoughtfully placing pillows to cushion Les’ fall. ;)

    5) If the fire department has been called, more than likely the local news outlet has been alerted too. Again, as a certain person here suggested this week. So in all likelihood Les and Punk will make the news. Between Les prancing around during the recent podcast and becoming the subject of a human interest story this arc, Mr. Knox is becoming quite the celeb. He Might even get a girlfriend out of it. One who’ll see this Les and not the one fake one he puts on date pics. And if Les gets a gal out of this, he’ll have not only Punk, but his extended family’s “hearts in the right place” bumbling attempts to thank for it. ;)

    6) What steps will be taken to prevent Punk from doing this again?

This is a fun story. I don’t read modern strips much. If we’re being honest, the form has long passed its golden age. But somehow it survives. And entertains.

Les has been one of the most enjoyable characters—it’s been interesting watching him grow as a person. A few years ago, nothing would have gotten him up on that roof to save some dumb animal. Now he scrambles up there without a second thought—which gets him into trouble. But also gives him a bit of time to reflect. I’m a dog person myself, but I’d do anything to save my dog. I’d go out of my way for a cat as well. But I’m terrified of heights, so good thing most dogs aren’t climbers.

OK, story time. I responded to a call for a man who had fallen from a ladder. It turned out to be one of our retired firemen. He was hurt pretty bad. They got him all bundled up and off in the ambulance, and started to pack up. I said to the firemen, “What about HIM?” and pointed to another guy up on the roof where the ladder had fallen from. They hadn’t even known he was there…

Part Two: ANOTHER fireman was using a ladder on his porch roof to get to the second floor roof. The ladder slid down the roof, and he fell and broke his neck. They were stabilizing him and his wife was running around frantic, when I looked at her and saw that her arm was broken! She had tried to catch him. She didn’t even know she was hurt. I sat her down and got her medical attention.

Believe it or not, the fireman was back to work in less than six weeks! The forst time I saw him I said “We thought you were a goner.” He said “I KNOW! I’m living proof of the power of prayer!” I said “Obviously not!” He said “I guess there were more for than against!”

Well, here it is, and we all saw it coming, didn’t we? In fact, firefighters don’t rescue cats from trees (a fireman on TV categorically said so), so it follows that they don’t rescue doofuses and their cats from roofs. But this is Luannville, where the firefolk wear dress uniforms to pull their shifts, so anything can happen.

Instead of dialing 911 or the fire dept which i do not think is warranted (there is no life threatening emergency), these folks should just go to the local Home Depot or hardware and invest in a decent ladder, something every home owner should have. Yes Irma is annoyed that her Thanksgiving dinner is on hold, but there are ways to solve the problem without declaring an emergency. While Al and Gunther seem incapable of arriving at a sensible solution, at least they are trying.

The sign over the door in the last panel says “FIRE STATION 3”. Station 3 has previously been identified as Brad’s station, so it seems likely that Brad will be one of the responders to Irma’s call. I’m inclined to go further and guess that that will somehow segue into some further interaction between Brad and Les, Gunther, Irma, and/or Al, but I’m at a loss to imagine what that interaction might be.

Predictions, anyone? For any of you who claim that this strip is ever so predictable, here’s your chance.

P.S., If I’ve gone too far out on a limb with my guesses, at least the firefighters/EMTs are on the way.
