Hey, I’m only 4 1/2…

People frequently fear O-Dor from Uranus, especially in small poorly ventilated places, such as the average cubicle at work.

Since an Uranian year is equivalent ot 84.3 Earthly ones, then only Humans older than 421 will tremble with fear of O-Dor.

Not many of those around, though.

Uranus was originally called King George’s star after the king of England. I always wondered if the discoverer of the green planet was trying to call King George a…..

O-Dor, you should be puffed up with pride that your father to you has passed such a Formidable And Redoubtable Title.

sandfan, that is the preferred pronunciation used by astronomers and noted in dictionaries, although the one that makes all these bad jokes possible is considered secondary and acceptable.

I never understood why astronomers felt the pronunciation “URINE-us” was any less scatalogical than “yer-ANUS.”

@puddleglum1066: While “Uranus” and “urinous” can be confused, it’s less obvious. And perhaps the overriding reason for choosing the “preferred” pronunciation after all has nothing to do (or at least less to do) with scatology, but rather with mythology and linguistics.

Methinks methane is the problem with O-Dor. It just pssses me off that all these years I’ve been saying your-ANUS when I should have been pronouncing it URINE-us!
